B i o g r a p h y (by Andy Kellman)
Brighton, England's Electrelane formed in 1998, eventually comprising guitarist Mia Clarke, bassist Rachel Dalley, drummer Emma Gaze, and keyboardist/guitarist Verity Susman. Sharing an equal amount of fondness for Krautrock, vintage equipment like the Farfisa organ, and modern production techniques, the band made their recorded debut in January 2000 with the Film Music single on In Denial. Following another single for Fierce Panda, the group set up the Sony-supported Let's Rock! label, issuing a pair of singles (Gabriel and Blue Straggler) prior to the April 2001 release of Rock It to the Moon, the band's first full-length. Active and vocal proponents of female involvement in music, the band became part of the ~Ladyfest concerts that took place in Glasgow a few months later. For the band's second album, 2004's The Power Out, Electrelane moved to Too Pure and added vocals and more pop structure to their sound. Dalley left the band late in 2004 and was replaced by Ros Murray. Axes, Electrelane's denser, more experimental third full-length, arrived the following spring. After extensive touring in support of Axes, the band convened in Berlin in summer 2006 to write their fourth album, No Shouts No Calls, which they recorded that fall; the album, which fell closer to The Power Out's pop sound, was released in spring 2007.
The Power Out
Gone Under Sea
On Parade Stand up against the wall So I can make you out Do do you wanna be it You take the power out One day we'll be wandering Girl you'll be a dandy And a deserter You sit astride your horses Dressed as Nelson I wanna see her I wanna see her I wanna see her with her horses Oh yeah I bet I'd like your underwear I bet I'd like your underwear I bet I'd like your underwear You got it down You got it down Ah you got it down You got it down The Valleys I heard it from the valleys I heard it ringing in the mountains I heard it from the valleys I heard him singing in the mountains Poem 'A Letter Home' by Siegfried Sassoon, written May 1916 : Robert, when I drowse to-night Skirting lawns of sleep to chase Shifting dreams in mazy light Somewhere then I'll see your face Turning back to bid me follow Where I wag my arms and hollow Over hedges hasting after Crooked smile and baffling laughter We know such dreams are true He's come back, all mirth and glory Running tireless, floating, leaping Down your web-hung woods and valleys Where the glowworm stars are peeping Like the prince in a fairy story Till I find you, quiet as stone On a hill-top all alone Staring outward, gravely pondering Jumbled leagues of hillock-wandering Winter called him far away You and I have walked together In the starving winter weather We've been glad because we knew Time's too short and friends are few Blossoms bring him home with May We've been sad because we missed One whose yellow head was kissed By the gods, who thought about him Till they couldn't do without him Oh now he's here again Standing in a wood that swings To the madrigal he sings And I'm sure, as here I stand That he shines through every land That he sings in every place Where we're thinking of his face While we know such dreams are true
Birds I loved you in the morning Before the sun would come You were the dawn to me I loved you in the evening While the birds were still singing You gave every song to me I want to see you More than anything Oh I miss you All day and everyday It's not that I can't go on without you Got a lot of things to do I'm busy, busy all the time Still I can't stop thinking about you Take The Bit Between Your Teeth I know you had it hard I know you had it hard I know you had it hard and you wanted to tell me I know you had it hard I know you had it hard I know you had it hard and you wanted to tell me Oh I don't want to hear it Turn it up, yeah yeah I know you had it hard I know you had it hard I know you had it hard and you wanted to tell me That you're the man That you're the man That you're the man, you've got all of the answers Oh I don't think you do Turn it up, yeah yeah Oh Sombra! ( Sonnet by Juan Boscán )
Oh shadow, oh shadow of relief, that fickle flies To make what's best in me be what I lack Oh shadow, oh shadow of relief, that fickle flies To make what's best in me be what I lack
Enter Laughing I saw a light And it shone Yeah it shone All around your head My friend there's no time For all our plans Now you're gone There's no way back from here Sometimes I just want to change But the people keep saying You can't give up your old ways Can you tell me how I could be so blind To ever let you go When I wanted you around You know I was just waiting for you to come over I thought that you knew it I never told you that I I've been looking out for you I've been thinking about you I could, I could, I could, I could I could, I could, I could not tell you This Deed ( Friedrich Nietzsche, from Die Fröhliche Wissenschaft, section 125 of book 3 )
Only One Thing Is Needed I'm going out again I'm going to meet that girl I saw her looking so fine, I said I've got to go on over You got it, you got it, you you you got it You're going to be my girl I saw you looking so fine, I said I've got to go on over I'm going out to meet her I'm going out to meet her
Axes
Bells Winter bells and dark and silent trees Help me while these thoughts are troubling me I slept through the falling of the leaves I never knew that time could get so far Away from me
Two For Joy I’ve no sorrow If I’m glad Oh let me show it Did you see those birds take flight She opened her hand and they flew across the room How the morning skies are high I watch them as they turn from black to blue I was dreaming of boats last night Boats in the desert and anchors and bridges and you Oh, let’s get in the water Oh, let’s get in the water They said “no, don’t go near the water” You said “oh, let’s get in the water” You said “oh oh oh…”
The Partisan ( Leonard Cohen Cover ) When they poured across the border I was cautioned to surrender This I could not do I took my gun and vanished I have changed my name so often I have lost my wife and children But I have many friends And some of them are with me Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come Then we'll come from the shadows Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come Then we'll come from the shadows
I Keep Losing Heart Careful where you swing that axe It might come back and hit you in the Yes, no, yes, no, no Yes, yes, oh
No Shouts, No Calls
The Greater Times You say you don't know what love means anymore Since I found you I'm tearing down the walls without you Ant I'm getting lost in all the plans that I heard you make About the older times About the greater times Oh I don't know, I don't know anyway Look up Look up I'll keep my eyes on you Do you remember when you were a child then ? And you laughed when you looked at the moon There's no meaning anymore We're floating in the sky And if you think that we are older now It's just our heads are butterflies Are you the one that I've been waiting for You say you don't know what love means anymore Since I found you I'm tearing down the walls, the walls, the walls Are you the one that I've been waiting for Are you the one that I've been waiting for
To The East You didn't know where to go Walking around in this flag-waving town I saw you waiting for a train And you disappeared Your face pressed up to the window You went so far away And I want to come there too I want to be with you I'm just waiting until you say these words: "Come back, come back, come back, oh, to me I'm living near Gdansk There's a train, you'd be here soon There's a life for me and you The East means so many things But it could be home, it could be home, it could be home, it could be home For you and me It could be home, it could be home, it could be home, it could be home Come back, come back, come back, oh, to me." And if you'd ever say those words I'd come to you, where you are It's too hard to be apart The East's not so far away But it could be home, it could be home, it could be home, it could be home For you and me It could be home, it could be home, it could be home, it could be home Come back, come back, come back Oh, to me
After The Call All the things that I've done Go around in my head And I can't forget All the things she said All the things that I've done Go around in my head And I can't forget All the things she said What could I do What could I do What could I do What could I do In her eyes In her eyes In her eyes It's all there in her eyes All the things that I've done Go around in my head And I can't forget All the things she said What could I do What could I do What could I do What could I do
In Berlin There is thunder in Berlin We fell down under a moving sky When you walked into the room tonight Lighting took hold of my heart for a while You are all that I want You are all that I need Snow will come and cover this town If we freeze I want to freeze next to you City lights shine overheads I never want to leave you You are all that I want You are all that I need You are all that I've longed for this wintertime You are all that I need
At Sea I think there will be rain tonight It's up there in the clouds that are forming We must secure the rigging now Before nightfalls the waves will be turning Did you feel the wind pick up Without the sails we're safer 'til the morning I wish there were another ship It's lonely now the rain has started falling I miss the friends we knew back home I'm thinking of them now the storm is rising At sea there's always tomorrow There are ways to be free We'll work it out We'll work it out
Saturday I've got a photo from a long time ago Hold it in your pocket Hold it in your pocket I've got a ring that my grandmother gave to me Wear it on your finger Wear it on your finger I've got a letter that's full of our secrets The last one you sent to me The last one you sent to me What shall I do with a life turned to memory I tried to forget you I tried to forget you Where shall I go when I wake from a dream of you I tried to forget you I tried to forget you I still see you I still see you I still see you I turn in my sleep and I see you beside me It's your imagination It's your imagination I go to the places we went to together Find another country Find another country I turn in my sleep and I see you beside me It's your imagination It's your imagination I want to go on but it's another day without you I tried to forget you I tried to forget you I still see you I still see you I still see you
Cut and Run Seeing you here, it makes me smile I hear you laugh and all day I am waiting to be next to you Hoping that you feel the same way It seems like you're moving away If it's the end I need to know Before I have to let you go I'm just not ready to be alone Say it, say it now You're not in love with me no more I'll try my best to catch up with you Say it, say it now You're not in love with me no more I'll try my best to catch up with you Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now You're not in love with me no more I'll try my best to catch up with you We were like fish in the sea And I thought you were the one for me We were like fish in the sea And I thought you were the one for me Baby, I'm afraid of change But I think it's more that I still like you Just as much as when we met I don't want to sleep alone And think of you with someone else Holding them when I still want To reach for you and hold you close In the night, you know I still love you Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now Say it, say it now You're not in love with me no more I'll try my best to catch up with you We were like fish in the sea And I thought you were the one for me We were like fish in the sea And I thought you were the one for me

I'm On Fire ( Bruce Springsteen Cover ) I'm on Fire Hey, little girl, is your daddy home Did he go away and leave you all alone I got a bad desire I'm on fire Tell me now, baby, is he good to you Can he do to you the things that I do I can take you higher I'm on fire Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull And cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my soul At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet And a freight train running through the middle of my head Only you can cool my desire I'm on fire I'm on fire I'm on fire
More Than This
( Roxy Music Cover / Live ) I could feel at the time There was no way of knowing Fallen leaves in the night Who can say where they're blowing As free as the wind And hopefully learning For the sea and the tide Has no way of turning More than this There's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this Oh there's nothing It was fun for a while There was no way of knowing Like a dream in the night Who can say where we're going No care in the world Maybe I'm learning For the sea and the tide Has no way of turning More than this There's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this Oh no, there's nothing
Smalltown Boy ( Bronski Beat Cover / Live ) You leave in the morning with everything you own In a little black case Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain On a sad and lonely face Mother will never understand Why you had to leave For the answers you seek will never be found at home The love that you need will never be found at home Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy You were the one that they'd talk about around town As they put you down And as hard as they would try, they'd hurt to make you cry But you'd never cry to them, just to your soul No, you'd never cry to them, just to your soul Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Cry boy, cry, cry boy, cry Cry boy, cry boy, cry Cry boy, cry boy, cry Cry boy, cry boy, cry Cry boy, cry boy, cry Cry boy, cry boy, cry You leave in the morning with everything you own In a little black case Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain On a sad and lonely face Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
