 (by Richard Skelly)

Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux can best be thought of as a Billie Holiday for the 1990s. Like Holiday, Peyroux was marketed as a jazz singer, when what she seems to do best is sing blues music. Though Peyroux may remind some listeners of Holiday, there are differences; she has her own sense of phrasing and interpretation. Her 1996 Atlantic Records debut, Dreamland, is a brilliant recording, as Peyroux's distinctive voice is not hindered by overly intricate arrangements. Most of the accompaniment on the record is light and sparse, the way it should be for a singer with such a unique voice. Her debut album features a cast of top players from the New York jazz scene, including pianist Cyrus Chestnut, drummer Leon Parker, guitarists Vernon Reid and Marc Ribot, and saxophonist/clarinetist James Carter.

Peyroux was born in Athens, Georgia, and raised between Southern California, Brooklyn, and Paris. She began singing at age 15, when she discovered the Latin Quarter in Paris and became enamored with several street musicians. By 1989, she was working with a group of musicians called the Riverboat Shufflers, and after working for a while as a hat passer for the group, she began singing with them. She then joined the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band at age 16, spending the next couple of years touring Europe while holding college in abeyance. That group formed the basis for her first album, for they performed the songs of Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, early Ella Fitzgerald, and others.

Though Dreamland was by no means a straight-ahead jazz album, Peyroux and her producers take a thoroughly modern approach to blues tunes from the 1920s and '30s. She interprets songs like Fats Waller's "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," Billie Holiday's "Gettin' Some Fun Out of Life," as well as tunes popularized by Bessie Smith, like "Reckless Blues" and "Lovesick Blues." But unlike Smith or Holiday, who weren't known as songwriters, Peyroux also recorded three of her own tunes on Dreamland, "Always a Use" (on which she accompanies herself on guitar), "Hey Sweet Man," and "Dreamland."

It took another eight years, however (the reasons for which were never very clear), for her follow-up, Careless Love, to hit shelves. This time working with producer Larry Klein on Rounder Records, Peyroux explored a more contemporary and eclectic mix of covers, including Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars," Bob Dylan's "You're Going to Make Me Lonesome," and older songs like Hank Williams' "Weary Blues." It was very well-received and made the 2006 release of Half the Perfect World, again a combination of covers and originals, highly anticipated. The record, which featured a duet with k.d. lang, included versions of songs by Serge Gainsbourg and Tom Waits, among others. Peyroux's third Rounder release was 2009's Bare Bones, her first to feature all original compositions by Peyroux (some shared with co-writers), was greeted with favorable reviews and was followed by an international tour. Peyroux took some time off, and emerged in 2011 with a download single that foreshadowed Standing on the Rooftop, her debut for the Decca imprint. The digital-only single offered a restrained yet elegant cover of the Beatles' "Martha My Dear," and the original "The Things I've Seen Today," co-written with violinist Jenny Scheinman. Standing on the Rooftop, released in June of 2011, was produced by Craig Street, and featured a core band of guitarists Marc Ribot and Chris Bruce, bassist Me'Shell Ndegeocello, and drummer Charlie Drayton. There were guest appearances by Patrick Warren and Allen Toussaint, among others. Peyroux wrote or co-wrote eight of the album's 12 songs; the covers included the aforementioned Beatles' tune, Bob Dylan's "I Threw It All Away," and Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain," as well as a the W.H. Auden poem "Lay Your Sleeping Head, My Love," set to music by Ribot. Peyroux's next album, The Blue Room, utilized the inspiration of Ray Charles' revolutionary Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music as a template. It revisited some tracks from that album but also employed more contemporary material. Featuring the singer backed by a stellar studio group and occasional strings, it was released by Decca in 2013.

Walkin' After Midnight

( Don Hecht and Alan Block )

I go out walkin'
After midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just like we used to do
I'm always walkin'
After midnight
Searching for you

I walk for miles
Along the highway
Well that's just my way
Of saying I love you
I'm always walkin'
After midnight
Searching for you

I stop to see a weeping willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be

I go out walkin'
After midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin'
After midnight
Searching for me

I stop to see a weeping willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be

I go out walkin'
After midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin'
After midnight
Searching for me

I stop to see a weeping willow
Cryin' on his pillow
Maybe he's cryin' for me
And as the skies turn gloomy
Night winds whisper to me
I'm lonesome as I can be

I go out walkin'
After midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just hopin' you may be
Somewhere a-walkin'
After midnight
Searching for me

Somewhere a-walkin'
After midnight
Searching for me

Somewhere a-walkin'
After midnight
Searching for me

Hey sweet man

( Madeleine Peyroux )

Hey sweet man
Who you give your lovin' to?
Hey sweet man
Who you give your lovin' to?
I gotta mind to love you
I'll love you through and through

Hey momma's child
Ain't you been waitin' for me?
Hey momma's child
Ain't you been waitin' for me?
I've gotta mind to love you
And my love won't leave you be

Hey sweet woman
I see you're searchin' too
Hey sweet woman
Ain't no man that love you
Hold on, pretty momma
Someday he'll be searchin' too

Well we need some lovin'
We need it oh-so-bad
We need some lovin'
We need it oh-so-bad

'Cause it's bad lovin', momma
It's the only thing we ever had

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself A Letter

( Joseph Young and Fred Ahlert )

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
Kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I've got 'em

I'm gonna smile and say "I hope you're feelin' better"
And sign "with love" the way you do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
Kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I've got 'em

I'm gonna smile and say "I hope you're feelin' better"
And sign "with love" the way you do
I'm gonna sit right down, write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
And make believe it came from you

(Getting Some) Fun Out of Life

( Billie Holiday )

When we want to love, we love
When we want to kiss, we kiss
With a little petting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

When we want to work, we work
When we wanna play, we play
In a happy setting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

Maybe we do the right things
Maybe we do the wrong
Spending each day
Wending our way along

But when we want to sing, we sing
When we want to dance, we dance
You can do your betting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

Maybe we do the right things
Maybe we do the wrong
Spending each day
Wending our way along

But when we want to sing, we sing
When we wanna dance, we dance
You can do your betting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

La vie en rose

( Louiguy & Edith Piaf )

Il me l'a dit, l'a juré
Pour la vie

Et dès que je l'aperçois
Alors je sens en moi
Mon coeur qui bat

Des nuits d'amour à plus finir
Un grand bonheur qui prend sa place
Des ennuis, des chagrins s'effacent
Heureux, heureux à en mourir

Quand il me prend dans ses bras
Il me parle tout bas
Je vois la vie en rose
Il me dit des mots d'amour
Des mots de tous les jours
Et ça me fait quelque chose

Il est entré dans mon coeur
Une part de bonheur
Dont je connais la cause
C'est lui pour moi
Moi pour toi dans la vie
Il me l'a dit, l'a juré
Pour la vie

Et bien quand je t'aperçois
Alors je sens en moi
Mon coeur qui bat

Always a use

( Madeleine Peyroux )

Maybe ain't no use in sayin' what I want it to be
Maybe ain't no use in playin' a tune
Maybe ain't no use in singin' my blues
But there's always a use in you and me

Maybe ain't no use in watchin' through the window
As the towns and our lives roll on by
Maybe it ain't worth all the trouble in thinkin'
But there's always use in you and I

We can make it true
We can work on it too
We can be what we want it to be
We can be together
As two or as three
‘cause there's always use in you and me

Maybe ain't no use in sayin' what I want it to be
Maybe ain't no use in playin' a tune
Maybe ain't no use in singin' my blues
But there's always a use in you and me

We can make it true
We can work on it too
We can be what we want it to be
We can be together
As two or as three
‘Cause there's always use in you and me

Maybe ain't no use in watchin' through the window
As the towns and our lives roll on by
Maybe it ain't worth all the trouble in thinkin'
But there's always use in you and I

A prayer

( Euston Jones )

Lord
I must be strong now
I don't belong now
In this world anymore

I'll say a final prayer for
Those I care for
Who've kept my company

My need is clear
I'm dying to have you near
To me

Lord
I don't belong now
If you are waiting
I am not afraid to die

I'm prepared to go
Divide my body and soul
Won't you

Lord
I don't belong now
If you are waiting
I am not afraid to die

Have mercy
Lord, I'm told it's paradise
To have and to hold you

Lord
I must be strong now
I don't belong now
In this world anymore

Lord
I won't be long now
If you are waiting
I am not afraid to die

Muddy Water

( Peter Derose, Harry Richman, Joe Trent )

Dixie moonlight, Swanee shore
Headed homebound just once more
To my Mississippi delta home

Southland got that grand garden spot
Although you believe or not
I hear those breeze a-whispering
"Come on back to me"

Muddy water 'round my feet
Muddy water in the street
No God don't shelter
Down on the delta

Muddy water in my shoes
Reeling and rocking to them lowdown blues
They live in ease and comfort down there
I do declare

Been away a year today
To wander and roam
I don't care it's muddy there
But this is my home

Got my toes turned Dixie way
'Round the delta let me lay
My heart cries out for muddy water

Been away a year today
To wander and roam
I don't care it's muddy there
But this is my home

Got my toes turned Dixie way
'Round the delta let me lay
My heart cries out for muddy water

Was I

( Chick Endor and Charlie Farrell )

Sweet young thing of sixteen
Thought I'd step out one night
I longed to get the thrilling life i've missed
I met a youth
A bit uncouth
Although he seemed alright
I knew him by the moment when we kissed

Then I got home, next day with a swollen head
My girlfriend asked if i'd had fun I said,
“was I drunk?
was he handsome?
Did momma give me hell?
Did I get a thrill?
Am I full of quiver?
Was he rough?
Did I care?
Am I glad I fell?
Every time I think of him do I shiver?
Was he hot?
And was I?
And would he stand for maybe?
He would not?
Did I lie?
Does he still think i'm a baby?
If I was, am I still?
Do I care?
Don't be silly
Was I drunk?
Was he handsome?
And did momma give me hell?

Was I drunk?
Was he handsome?
Did momma give me hell?
With his hands loose as no refusin'
Did he fight?
Was I blue?
Almost shamed to tell
And I don't know yet the system he was usin'

Well I said, stop, please, behave!
Well what's the use of breathin'?
He said, give
So I gave
After all, what was I savin'?
Am I glad?
Holy gee,
Have I had fun, you're askin' me?
Was I drunk?
Was he handsome?
And did momma give me hell?”

Dreamland

( Madeleine Peyroux )

Dreamin'
Makin' my way
Dreamin'
Won't let me stay in your arms
In your warm
In your love

Sleepin'
Away the day
Hopin'
That we two could stay
All alone
On our own revelries

Let's make a pact for our lives
And our homelands
Built on the bricks that we bathed

In my dreamland
Home sweet dreamland
Always a dreamland
For the two of us,
Together,
We'll stay

Let's build a homeland together in the sand
We have forever right here at hand
In dreamland
Home sweet dreamland
Always a dreamland
For the two of us,
Together,
We'll stay

Reckless Blues

( Bessie Smith & Jack Gee )

When I wasn't nothing but a child
When I wasn't nothing but a child
All you men tried to drive me wild

Now I'm, now I'm growing old
Now, now I'm growing old
And I've got what it takes to get all of you men told

My mama says I'm reckless, my daddy says I'm wild
My mama says I'm reckless, my daddy says I'm wild
I ain't good looking but I'm somebody's angel child

Daddy, mama wants some loving
Daddy, mama need some hugging
Darn it pretty papa
Mama wants some lovin' I vow
Darn pretty papa
Mama wants some lovin' right now

Lovesick blues

( Bessie Smith, Irving Mills & Cliff friend )

I've got a lovesick tale to tell to you
Though it ain't no fail of mine
It's about a gal named sue
And a boy named lou
They were fightin' all the time
Sue came home one afternoon
And found an empty dining room

Without a word
A turtledove had flown
Sue began to moan
“My sweetie went away
But he didn't say where
He didn't say when
He didn't say why
Without biddin' me goodbye
Oh I'm blue as I can be

I know he loves another one
But he didn't say who
He didn't say when
He didn't say what
His momma has got
That took my sweetie from me

I'm like a little lost sheep
And I can't sleep
But I keep tryin' to forget
My travelin' poppa, he left his momma all alone
I groan

My sweetie went away but he didn't say where
He didn't say when
He didn't say why
I know I'll die
Why don't he hurry on home?”

Careless Love

Dance Me To The End Of Love

( Leonard Cohen )

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove

Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of

Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above

Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn

Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove

Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Don't wait too long

You can cry a million tears
You can wait a million years
If you think that time will change your ways
Don´t wait too long

When your morning turns to night
Who´ll be loving you by candlelight
If you think that time will change your ways
Don´t wait too long

Maybe I got a lot to learn
Time can slip away
Sometimes you got to lose it all
Before you find your way

Take a chance, play your part
Make romance, it might break your heart
But if you think that time will change your ways
Don´t wait too long

It may rain, it may shine
Love will age like fine red wine
But if you think that time will change your ways
Don´t wait too long

Maybe you and I got a lot to learn
Don´t waste another day
Maybe you got to lose it all
Before you find your way

Take a chance, play your part
Make romance, it might break your heart
But if you think that time will change your ways
Don´t wait too long
Don't wait
Hmm... Don't wait

Don't cry baby

( Bessie Smith )

Honey please don't cry
Listen to me
There's no reason why
We shouldn't agree

If i hurt your feeling
I apologize
You're the only one
That I idealize
Don't cry baby
Don't cry baby
Dry your eyes
Let be sweetheart again

You know I didn't mean to
Make you feel blue
Honest I never do it again

Won't you forgive
Won't you forget
Do as I ask you too
I never let you regret
If you just start a new
You know I'm sorry
Oh so sorry
Just don't cry baby
There's no one but you

Won't you forgive
Won't you forget
Do as I ask you too
I never let you regret
Just start a new
You know I'm sorry
Oh so sorry
Don't cry baby
There's no one but you

Don't cry baby
There's no one but you

You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

( Bob Dylan )

I've seen love go by my door
It's never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow
Been shooting in the dark too long
When something's not right it's wrong
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Dragon clouds so high above
I've only known careless love,
It's always hit me from below.
This time around it's more correct
Right on target, so direct,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Purple clover, Queen Anne lace,
Crimson hair across your face,
You could make me cry if you don't know.
Can't remember what I was thinkin' of
You might be spoilin' me too much, love,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Flowers on the hillside, bloomin' crazy,
Crickets talkin' back and forth in rhyme,
Blue river runnin' slow and lazy,
I could stay with you forever
And never realize the time.

Situations have ended sad,
Relationships have all been bad.
Mine've been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud.
But there's no way I can compare
All those scenes to this affair,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

You're gonna make me wonder what I'm doing,
Staying far behind without you.
You're gonna make me wonder what I'm saying,
You're gonna make me give myself a good talking to.

I'll look for you in old Honolulu,
San Francisco and Ashtabula,
You're gonna have to leave me now, I know.
But I'll see you in the sky above,
In the tall grass, in the ones I love,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Between the Bars

( Elliott Smith )

Drink up, baby
Stay up all night
Things you could do
You won't but you might

The potential you'll be
You'll never see
Promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
And forget all about
Pressure of days
Do what I say
And I'll make you okay
And drive them away
Images stuck in your head

People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

Drink up, baby
Look at the stars.
And I'll kiss you again
Between the bars
Where i'm seeing you there
With your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught

Drink up one more time
And I'll make you mine
And keep you apart
Deep in my heart
Separate from the rest
Where I like you the best
Keep the things you forgot

The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

No more

( Billie Holiday )

You ain't gonna bother me
No more
Nohow
Love just goes so far
No more
Woke up this morining and found
I didn't care for you
No more
Not now

Never felt so good before
You're down to my size
It's over and done
So honey, step down from your throne
That look in your eyes
Don't bother me none
Can take you or leave you alone

From my window
Skys ain't grey
No more
Not now
Here's the day
That I've been waiting for
Got only one heart
One heart with no spares
Must save it for loving
Somebody who cares
So you ain't gonna bother me
No more, no more

Got only one heart
One heart with no spares
Must save it for loving
Somebody who cares
So you ain't gonna bother me
No more, no more

Lonesome Road

( Frank Sinatra )

Look down, look down
That lonesome road
Before you travel on

Look up, look up
And seek your maker
Before Gabriel blows his horn

I'm weary of toting, such a heavy load
Trudging down, that lonesome road

Look down, look down
That lonesome road
Before you travel on

I'm weary of toting, such a heavy load
Trudging down, that lonesome road

Look down, look down
That lonesome road
Before you travel on
Before you travel on

J'ai deux amours

( Joséphine Baker )

On dit qu'au delà des mers
Là-bas sous le ciel clair
Il existe une cité
Au séjour enchanté
Et sous les grands arbres noirs
Chaque soir

Weary blues

( Hank Williams Sr )

Weary blues from waitin'
Lord, I've been waitin' so long
These blues have got me cryin'
Oh, sweet daddy please come home

The snow falls 'round my window
But it can't chill my heart
God knows it died the day you left
My dream world fell apart.

Weary blues from waitin'
Lord, I've been waitin' so long
These blues have got me cryin'
Oh, sweet daddy please come home
Oh, sweet daddy please come home

Through tears I watch young lovers
As they go strollin' by
And all the things that might have been
God forgive me if I cry

Weary blues from waitin'
Lord, I've been waitin' so long
These blues have got me cryin'
Oh, sweet daddy please come home
Oh, sweet daddy please come home

I'll Look Around

( Billie Holiday )

I'll look around
Until I've found someone
Who laughs like you

I know somewhere
Spring must fill the air
With sweetness just as rare
As the flower
That you gave me to wear

I look around
And when I've found someone
Who laughs like you
I'll know this love
I'm dreaming of
Won't be the old love
I always knew

I know somewhere
Love must fill the air
With sweetness just as rare
As the flower
That you gave me to wear

I look around
And when I've found someone
Who laughs like you
I'll know this love
I'm dreaming of
Won't be the old love
I always knew

Careless Love

( Bessie Smith )

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
You've fly though my head like wine
You've wrecked the life
Of many a poor girl
And you nearly spoiled this life of mine

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
In your clutches of desire
You've made me break a many true vow
Then you set my very soul on fire

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
All my happiness bereft
Cause you've filled my heart with weary old blues
Now I'm walkin' talkin' to myself

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Trusted you now it's too late
You've made me throw my old friend down
That's why I sing this song of hate

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Night and day I weep and moan
You brought the wrong man into this life of mine
For mysins till judgement I'll atone

This is heaven to me

( Billie Holiday )

When I hear them say
There's better living
Let them go their way
To that new living
I won't ever stray
'Cause this is heaven to me

Long as freedom grows
I want to seek it
If it's yes or no
It's me who'll speak it
'Cause the lord, He knows
That this is heaven to me

If you've got your hands
And got your feet
To sing your song
All through the street
You raise your head
When night is done
Shout your thanks up to the sun

So when I hear them say
There's better living
Let them go their way
To that new living
I won't ever stray
'Cause this is heaven to me
'Cause this is heaven to me

Got You on My mind

Back in your own backyard

( Billie Holiday )

That bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own backyard

You'll see your castles in Spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own backyard

Oh you can go to the East
Go to the West
Someday you'll come
Weary at heart
Back where you started from

You'll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own backyard

That bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own backyard

You'll see your castles in Spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own backyard

You can go to the East
Go to the West
Someday you'll come
Weary at heart
Back where you started from

You'll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own
Back in your own
Back in your own backyard

J'ai deux amours

( Joséphine Baker )

On dit qu'au delà des mers
Là-bas sous le ciel clair
Il existe une cité
Au séjour enchanté
Et sous les grands arbres noirs
Chaque soir

Got you on my mind

( Joe Thomas & Howard Biggs )

I've got you on my mind
I'm feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low

I'm wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

Tears begin to fall
Every time I hear your name
Tears begin to fall
Every time I hear your name

But since you went away
Nothing seems to be the same

No matter how I try
My heart keeps telling me that I
Can't forget you
If ever it should be
That you want to come back to me
I'm gonna let you

I've got you on my mind
I'm feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low

I'm wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

No matter how I try
My heart keeps telling me that I
Can't forget you
If ever it should be
That you want to come back to me
I'm gonna let you

I've got you on my mind
I'm feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low

I'm wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

I'm wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

Jealous Guy

( John Lennon )

I was dreaming of the past
And my heart was beating fast
I began to lose control
I began to lose control
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh no, I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

I was feeling insecure
You might not love me anymore
I was shivering inside
I was shivering inside

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh no, I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh no, I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy

I was trying to catch your eyes
Thought that you was trying to hide
I was swallowing my pain
I was swallowing my pain

I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh no, I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy, watch out
I'm just a jealous guy, look out babe
I'm just a jealous guy

The Way You Look Tonight

( Jerome Kerns )

Some day
When I'm awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow
Just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight

Lovely
With your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me but to love you
Just the way you look tonight

With each word your tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart

You're lovely
Don't you ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it
'Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight

With each word your tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart

You're lovely
Never, ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it
'Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight
Tonight
Just the way you look tonight

Playin'

(Galison/Peyroux)

Playin', playin'
Stuck on the corner of the afternoon.
I hear the sound, some heart achin'
Or just the same old tune
Playin', playin'
Fortune fallin' in my old chapeau
And I've gpt a mind to get the whole world shakin'
Every little place I go

Tell you the story of the angels in the street
Singin', "There ain't no glory but the blues"
And you Delight in the ringing of the beat
'Cause you know you ain't got nothin' to lose

Just playin', playin'
I know my life may be just a song
And I'll survive when the world's overtaken
'Cause I love to play along

Tell you the story of the angels in the street
Singin', "There ain't no glory but the blues"
And you delight in the ringing of the beat
'Cause you know you ain't got nothin' to lose

Just playin', ah, playin'
Maybe my life is just a song
Now, I know I'll survive when the world's overtaken
'Cause I love to play along

Yes, I know I'll survive when the world's overtaken
Because I love to play along

Shoulda known

William Galison :

One hot night in the middle of June
In a Lousiana Bayou by the light of the moon
By the bank of a river, on an old dead log
Sat a shiny black scorpion and a big green frog

Now the water was deep and the river was wide
And the Scorpion had commitments on the opposite side
She said Hey Mr Froggy I'd be mighty obliged
If I could hop on your back and you could give me a ride

Shoulda known
Shoulda known
Well my friends oh, see me crying
And all they can say is shoulda known

Well the frog said I'd love to but there's just one thing
You got a bad reputation for a terrible sting
If I take you cross the River like you're askin me to
How do I know you won't sting me when the journey is through

The scorpion said “Man don't believe the hype Don't you fall for that tired old stereotype”
"If you do me this favor and deliver me there
I will tell you a little secret only scorpions share"

Shoulda known
Shoulda known
Well my friends oh see me crying
And all they can say is
Shoulda known

So our friends started out across the perilous flood
And the scorpion weighed more than the frog thought she would
But the froggy was strong and he knew he'd prevail
Til he felt the deadly point of that scorpions tail

So the water swept over the unfortunate pair
And the froggy cried out with the last of his air
He said “Why did you do it?, now you're goin' down too!”
Said the Scorpion “it's my nature, that's what scorpions do”

You shoulda known
You shoulda known
Well my friends oh see me crying
And all they can say is
You shoulda known, alright !

Well I met her downtown in a bleecker street bar
Serenading some drunks for the tips in a jar
Well I knew her reputation from the old grapevine
But she sounded so sweet and she looked so fine

Well she shot me a smile and she bought me a beer
And she told the saddest story that you ever will hear
My judgement dissolved in a bottle wine
I was reading her lips and she was reading my mind

Shoulda known
I shoulda known
Well my friends oh see me crying
And all they can say is
Shoulda known

If the end of the story isn't perfectly plain
Know that Happy ever after ain't the final refrain
But my time's getting short and the story is long
But suffice it to say, you find me singin this song

Shoulda known
I shoulda known
Well my friends oh see me crying
And all they can say is
Shoulda known

Well my friends oh see me crying
And all they can say is
Shoulda known

Heaven to me

To that new living
I won't ever stray
'Cause this is heaven to me

Long as freedom grows
I want to seek it
If it's yes or no
It's me who'll speak it
'Cause the lord, He knows
That this is heaven to me

If you've got your hands

Shout your thanks up to the sun

So when I hear them say
There's better living
Let them go their way
To that new living
I won't ever stray
'Cause this is heaven to me
'Cause this is heaven to me

Heaven Help Us All

( Ron Miller )

Heaven help the child who never had a home
Heaven help the girl who walks the street alone
Heaven help the roses when the bombs begin to fall
Heaven help us all

Heaven help the poor man if he struggles one more day
Heaven help the rich man if he turns his back away
Heaven help the man who kicks the man who's got to crawl
Heaven help us all

Heaven help us all
Heaven help us all
Help us all, Lord
Hear our call when we call
Heaven help us all

Heaven help the boy who won't reach twenty-one
And heaven help the man who gave that boy a gun
Heaven help the people with their backs against the wall
Heaven help us all

Heaven help the innocents who's final hour it is
Heaven help the angry men who take their lives with his
Help the true believers who believes in ours at all
Heaven help us all

Heaven help us all
Heaven help us all
Heaven help us Lord
Hear our call when we call
Heaven help us all

Now I lay me down in a troubled world asleep
And I pray, pray the Lord my soul to keep
Keep hatred from the mighty,
And the mighty from the small
Heaven help us all

Heaven help us all
Heaven help us all
Heaven help us Lord
Hear our call when we call
Heaven help us all

Half the perfect world

I'm all right

He made me laugh
He made me cry
He smoked his doggies in bed
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before

I asked the boy for a few kind words
He gave me a novel instead
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before

It's fine, it's okay
It was wrong either way
I just wanted to say
There isn't much fun when you're drinking wine

He got drunk, he fell down
He threw a few of my things around
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before

I'd like to believe that it's easy to leave
But I have to conceive that wherever you are
You're still driving my car
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But tears don't leave any scars
So I'm all alright, I'm all alright
I've been lonely before

Hmm I'm all alright
I'm all alright, I'm all alright
Ah, ah, yeah
He played solitaire in bed
Used to blow bubbles in bed
He sang Christmas songs in bed

The summer wind

( Grethe Ingmann / Lyrics by Hans Bradtke )

The summer wind
Came blowing in
From across the sea
It lingered there
So warm and fair
To walk with me
All summer long
We sang a song
And strolled on golden sand
Two sweethearts
And the summer wind

Like painted kites
Those days and nights
Went flyin by
The world was new
Beneath a blue
Umbrella sky
Then softer than
A piper man
One day it called to you
And I lost you
To the summer wind

The autumn wind
And the winter wind
Have come and gone
And still the days
Those lonely days
Go on and on
And guess who sighs her lullabies
Through nights that never end
My fickle friend
The summer wind
The summer wind

Blue Alert

( Leonard Cohen )

There's perfume burning in the air
Bits of beauty everywhere
Shrapnel flying, soldier hit the dirt

She comes so close
You feel her then
She tells you No and No again
Your lip is cut on the edge of her pleated skirt
Blue Alert

Visions of her drawing near
Arise, abide, and disappear
You try to slow it down
It doesn't work

It's just another night I guess
All tangled up in nakedness
You even touch yourself
You're such a flirt
Blue Alert

You know how nights like this begin
The kind of knot your heart gets in
Any way you turn is going to hurt

There's perfume burning in the air
Bits of beauty everywhere
Shrapnel flying, soldier hit the dirt
Blue Alert

She breaks the rules so you can see
She's wilder than you'll ever be
You talk religion but she won't convert

Her body's twenty stories high
You try to look away, you try
But all you want to do is get there first
Blue Alert

You know how nights like this begin
The kind of knot your heart gets in
Any way you turn is going to hurt

There's perfume burning in the air
Bits of beauty everywhere
Shrapnel flying, soldier hit the dirt
Blue Alert
Blue Alert...

Everybody's Talkin'

( Fred Neil )

Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes of my mind

People stopping, staring
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Through the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off the north east wind
Sailing on a summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

Everybody's talking at me
I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind

People stopping, staring
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Through the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off the north east wind
Sailing on a summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

No I won't let you leave my love behind
No I won't let you leave my love behind

River

( Joni Mitchell )

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don't snow here
It stays pretty green
I'm going to make a lot of money
Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly

I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby cry
He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I'm so hard to handle
I'm selfish and I'm sad
Now I've gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly

Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby say goodbye

It's coming on Christmas
They're cutting down trees
They're putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on

A Little Bit

You got a lot of tenderness
And so much love, you can get no rest
If you‘re willing to waste a little time

I don't wanna all of it
All I need is a little bit

You got a lot of money saved
No use taking it all to your grave
Ain't worth nothing
If you ain't feelin' fine

I don't wanna all of it
All I need is a little bit

You know daddy gave you everything on a silver platter
But the one thing he never gave you
Was the one thing that really matters

So if you feel unsatisfied
Something missing deep down inside
You had so many lovers
But you never really tried

I don't wanna all of it
All I need is a little bit

Telling you not getting dark
It's getting late
Now ain't we all need someone
To sit down and set us free

You got gold to give and time to pray
You think living right is living your way
But there's heaven down here, baby
We can find it if we try

I don't wanna all of it
All I need is a little bit
I don't wanna all of it
All I need is a little bit

Once in a While

From bad luck
I'm walking away
I'm not getting stuck
I'm not gonna stay
To good things
I'm moving ahead
I'm tired of dying
I'm living instead

Once in a while I'll wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once in a while
Comes and it fades away

The sun's up and lighting the sky
I never could see it
It just passed me by
Good things keep moving along
I'm not looking backward
For something that's gone

Once in a while I'll wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once and a while
Comes and fades away

I don't know what love is
I'm selfish and lazy
And when I get scared
I can act like I'm crazy

When I think of your kisses
I'm still gonna smile
I'm still gonna miss you
Once in a while
Once in a while

Once in a while I'll wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once in a while
Comes and it fades away

Good things keep moving ahead
I'm tired of dying
I'm living instead

(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night

( Tom Waits )

Well you gassed her up
Behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one
In your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're looking for the heart of Saturday night

And you got paid on Friday
And your pockets are jingling
And you see the lights
You get all tinglin' cause you're cruising with a six
You're looking for the heart of Saturday night

Then you comb your hair
Shave your face
Trying to wipe out every trace
All the other days
In the week you know that this'll be the Saturday
You're reachin' your peak

Stopping on the red
You're going on the green
Tonight'll be like nothing
You've ever seen
You're barreling down the boulevard
Looking for the heart of Saturday night

Tell me is the crack of the poolballs, neon buzzin
Telephone's ringing; it's your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that's smiling from the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye

Makes it kind of quiver down in the core
You're dreaming of them Saturdays that came before
Now you're stumbling
You're stumbling onto the heart of Saturday night
Now you're stumbling
You're stumbling onto the heart of Saturday night

Half The Perfect World

Every night he'd come to me
I'd cook for him, I'd pour his tea
I was in my thirties then
Had made some money
Lived with men

We'd lay us down to give and get
Beneath the white mosquito net
And since no counting had begun
We lived a thousand years in one

The candles burned
The moon went down
The polished hill
The milky town
Transparent, weightless, luminous
Uncovering the two of us
On that fundamental ground
Where love's unwilled, unleashed, unbound
And half the perfect world is found

The candles burned
The moon went down
The polished hill
The milky town
Transparent, weightless, luminous
Uncovering the two of us
On that fundamental ground
Where love's unwilled, unleashed, unbound
And half the perfect world is found

La javanaise

( Serge Gainsbourg )

Hélas avril en vain me voue à l'amour

California raining

California rain is falling
I can hear the summer calling
Far away, far away
A song that's fading

Put me on a plane tomorrow
I'll try to run from all my sorrow
Far away, far away
From endless waiting

It's so cold here without my sun
I'm so sad here, far away from everyone
What a fool to be ambitious
Moving here with all of my wishes
Far away, far away
From where my heart is

Shut the phone off and pack my bags
No more boys who boast and brag
far away, far away
Where I belong

I'm so sorry for some things I've done
I'll be lonely till I can see my only one
California rain keeps falling
I can hear my old love calling
Far away, far away
Where I started

I'm going back, back where I belong
Gonna catch a train
I gotta get back where I belong
Get back...

Smile

( Alfred Newman )

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, whats the use of crying
Youll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Bare Bones

Instead

Instead of feelin' bad, be glad you've got somewhere to go
Instead of feelin' sad, be happy you're not all alone
Instead of feelin' low, get high on everything that you love
Instead of wastin' time, feel good 'bout what you're dreamin' of.

Instead of tryin' to win something you never understood
Just play the game you know, eventually you'll love her good
It's silly to pretend that you have something you don't own
Just let her be your woman and you'll be her man…

Instead of feelin' broke, buck up and get yourself in the black
Instead of losin' hope, touch up the things that feel out of whack
Instead of bein' old, be young because you know you are
Instead of feelin' cold, let sunshine into your heart.

Instead of acting crazy chasin' things that make you mad
Keep your heart ahead, it'll lead you back to what you have
With every step you're closer to the place you need to be
It's up to you to let her love you sweetly…

Instead of feelin' bad be glad you've got someone to love
Instead of feelin' sad, be happy there's a god above
Instead of feelin' low, remember you're never on your own
Instead of feelin sad, be happy that she's there at home
She's waitin' for you by the phone
So be glad that she is all your own!

Get happy
She's waitin' for you by the telephone.
So get back home!

Bare Bones

I remember what my daddy taught me 'bout how warm whiskey is in a cold ditch
And one more thing about good and evil: you can't tell which is which
Well if the rest is lost to history or maybe wasted on a fool like me
I got these bare bones, he left me something after all.

Old Hamlet's done now, dead and gone and there's no ghost walks
Poor Yorick tells ya everything he knows with no tongue to talk
It seems the truth is hidden where the sun don't shine
And I'm never certain if it's theirs or mine
But it's the bare bones, they give you that much after all.

They preached the gospel down in Metairie
They preached it in school
It never made much sense to me
Wonder if it was supposed to

You go on down to millionaire's row, watch a while, and tell me what you see
The truth itself is nothing but a gamble, it might or might not set you free
I guess my old man was hard to read
And I don't really know what I believe
But in these bare bones, there's somethin' lovely after all.

Damn the Circumstances

My heart is like a hand-me-down made soft by older brothers
My body's like my father's house, the sin of generations

Damn the circumstances
Life is hard enough
Damn the bones that rattle
Faith is good enough

You shook the ground beneath my feet, my hopes turned into water
The house came crashing down on me in the early morning hours

Damn the circumstances
Life is hard enough
Damn the bones that rattle
Faith is good enough

Now the lines are drawn and we sleep in the rags and dust
Where all good will has gone and the dreams we had went bust

Damn the circumstances
Life is hard enough
Damn the bones that rattle
Faith is good enough

River of Tears

Stop all this talk, turn off the telephone
Open up another bottle, send those people home
Let it get real quiet, turn that lamp way down low
I'm gonna float down this river of tears

I remember how we spoke on the days he was dry
Even now that he's gone he can make a woman cry
But he saw through me deaf dumb and blind
He knew his way down this river of tears

“Dashed hopes and best intentions” people say
He could sit and drink the way a monk could pray
So grab that silver flask, pour yourself another glass and
Watch me rage down this river of tears

Turn out the stars now, darken every one
Watch the clouds cover that big yellow moon
Close the blinds, mute the sun
There's nowhere left to run

Picked up that old decanter that he used to drink from
Turned on his stereo just to hear it hum
Daddy I'm gonna wrap myself in blankets and listen to you sing
And I'm gonna float down this river of tears

You Can't Do Me

You can't do me, you can't do me, you can't do me the way you did before
You can't do me, you can't do me, you can't do me the way you did before
'Cause when you do, and when you do, 'cause when you do, you know I get so blue!
When you do, and when you do, 'cause when you do, you know I get so blue and I go
Down like a deep sea diver, out like a Coltrane tenor-man,
Lost like a Chinese war baby, gone, gone, gone!
Blewed like a Mississippi sharecropper, screwed like a high-school cheerleader,
Tattooed like a popeyed sailorman, gone, gone, gone!

I should have been, I should have been, I should have been a pair of ragged claws.
I should have been, I should have been, I should have been a pair of ragged claws.
And for a while, for just a while, for a good long while you'd see me smile, smile, smile
I'd crawl the seas on my bony knees, no apologies for my brave new style. I wouldn't go
Bust like an internet millionaire, boom like a Lebanese belly-dancer,
Bang like a new year's firecracker, gone, gone, gone! I wouldn't get
Bent like a rattan rockin' chair, blanked like a last place also ran,
Burned like an Arkansas griddlecake, gone, gone, gone!

I should have been, I should have been, I should have been a pair of ragged claws.
And if I was, if I was, if I was then I'd complain no more.
And for a while, for just a while, for a good long while you'd see me smile, smile, smile.
I'd crawl the seas, on my bony knees, no apologies for my brave new style.
I wouldn't get

Wrecked like a rebel on a racetrack, jacked like a '51 Cadillac,
Macked like a bunny in a mansion, gone, gone, gone!
Spitooned like an Alabama 'backy wad, harpooned in a Melville sailor yard,
Cartooned like a Charlie Brown Christmas card, gone, gone, gone!

Schooled like a milk money bully whip, sued like a teenage downloader,
Unglued like a bull in a china shop, gone, gone, gone!
Cranked like a speed freak high-roller, yanked like a little league ball swatter,
Spanked like a fly on a bar counter, gone, gone, gone!

Duked like a pistol whipped card swapper, rebuked like a Bible Belt border crosser
Juked like a payola chart topper, gone, gone, gone!

Love and Treachery

I put on my gloves tonight, pull onto the road to San Berdu
They remind me of hustlers, confidence men, and you
My hands are warm beneath them, and easy on the wheel
Without your love and treachery the calm is all I feel

I shiver in the mirror, pull my belt across my hips
The leather's hard in bending as your fingers to my lips
I wrap it tightly in defense as if your arms were near
But for your love and treachery there's nothing left to fear

I'll take a glass of wine and recall the words you spoke
From the bottom of your cup, covered in spit and smoke
But in your voice I'll hear my own and recognize the crime
That all your love and treachery has ended up as mine

I see you in the rearview with just a passing glance
How your eyes shine, as if through mine, you'd see and understand
As if we'd played each other but never knew the score
And all was love and treachery but isn't anymore
That all was love and treachery but isn't anymore.

Our Lady of Pigalle

Can I buy you something, can I stroke your hair,
Can I hold your hand and take you somewhere?
You're a young nobody, you're a perfect soul,
You're an empty altar that can make me whole.
Can I take you somewhere, can I wipe your tears,
Can I fill your pockets or befriend you here?
You're the final offer for the men who call,
My highest hiding place, our lady of Pigalle.

Will you be ascending in this midnight heat
On a flying buttress with stony feet?
In the revolutions we tear down your walls and then
Redeem you, reclaim you, our lady of Pigalle.

You're a young nobody, I'm a passing glance
In the mad injustice of eternal romance;
Beloved, broken into and caressed,
You will bridge the waters and I'll give you rest.
In the early hours when the streetlights fade,
For my inquisition and my last crusade,
You'll be savior, a reason for it all
And I'll be blessed and favored, our lady of Pigalle.

Will you be ascending in this midnight heat
On a flying buttress with stony feet?
In the revolutions we tear down your walls and then
Redeem you, reclaim you, our Lady of Pigalle.

Up to the places of your heart where souls wrestle angels in the dark
Ten thousand years the scent of life bottled up in you child,
You're driving men wild!

Can I buy you something, can I wash your feet,
Can I read you poems of my thirsty retreat?
I'm a young nobody, I'm a perfect soul,
I can take you in, I can make you whole.

Will you be ascending in this midnight heat
On a flying buttress with stony feet?
In the revolutions we tear down your walls, and then
Redeem you, reclaim you, our Lady of Pigalle.

Homeless Happiness

I sit here content my thoughts and my feelings
Remembering who I used to be
The life I have now is much more appealing
No hurries no worries for me

A bench by the shore a coat for my pillow
A future with no guarantee
The world was a rat race and I had my fill oh
No hurries no worries for me

Homeless Happiness
My castle's the stars and the sea
Homeless Happiness
If this door is freedom then I've found the key

The house and the car, those people around us
Were really for you not for me
We worked for the dream, alas all that bound us
Were hurries and worries you see

Homeless Happiness
My castle's the stars and the sea
Homeless Happiness
If this door is freedom then I've found the key

I'm keeping my word I'm right where we parted
My story is simple enough
Since I left behind all the plans that we charted
No hurries no worries my love

To Love You All Over Again

A quiet room is what you get, an empty glass, an unmade bed,
A picture window with a view, and all I think about is you
To feel so bad, to feel so good, to let it be misunderstood,
Now I long to lose my senses to love you all over again.

The shouted words, the tired sighs, the traded kiss of sad goodbyes,
The living off of our desires, then putting out a thousand fires:
To feel so bad, to feel so good, to let it be misunderstood,
Now I'd tear down my defenses to love you all over again.

To know a place without regret, you make believe you paid your debt
But in that clean and quiet room you can't believe it's over yet.

Out on a lark, at home asleep, the endings play, the bands retreat
But in that dumb luck of the few, the consolation comes to you:
To feel so bad, to feel so good, the verdict's in − it's understood
I will be tried for my offenses and love you all over again.

I Must Be Saved

Lose your keys under the house, lose the button from your blouse,
Lose the plastic diamond ring from the parade
Lose the color in your lips, lose the swingin' in your hips,
But if you lose me in your grips I must be saved.

Lose the harmonies we learned, lose the taste of bread you earned,
Lose the stash you always kept but never craved
Lose your rhythm, lose your lines, lose your sense of passing time,
But if you lose me in your mind I must be saved.

And if you find your conscience plagued by some misplaced or righteous rage
Then lose yourself instead till you remember to forget.

Lose your passion and your hope, lose the knotting in your rope,
Lose your armor in the struggles that you brave
Lose the children that you bore, lose the battle, lose the war,
But if you lose me in your core I must be saved.

Lose your reverence for winners, your patience with forgiveness,
You don't have to be a master or a slave
Lose your senses, lose your mind, lose your faith in human kind,
But if you lose me down the line I must be saved.

And if you find your conscience plagued by some misplaced or righteous rage
Then lose yourself instead till you remember to forget.

Lose perfection for a start, lose the dream you kept apart,
Lose the chance to find another who'd behave,
And then if you haven't yet, lose your loser's last regret
For if you lose me in your net I must be saved.

Lose the vows we never spoke, lose the punch-line to the joke,
Lose your innocence as if willingly you gave
Lose the kettle and the pot, you can lose the best you've got
But if you lose me in your heart I must be saved.

Somethin' Grand

Wide awake, breath taken, I'm shaken by my sight-
Couldn't sleep, couldn't keep quiet secrets on the wind I hear

There's something grand comin', cool drummin'
Through my empty city
On a night breeze so free lovers must collide
And the morning sun must rise,  all's forgiven.

Cool your heads highwaymen, come-what-may men who run & fight
Here's your drink, time to think, and soon you're wandering away your fears.

There's somethin' grand comin', good strummin'
Through my empty city
Till the morning breaks and weary eyes are clear
Let the dream of sleep take troubles far away from here.

All's forgiven

Standing On The Rooftop

Martha My Dear

( The Beatles Cover )

Martha my dear
Though I spend my days in conversation
Please, remember me
Martha my love
Don't forget me
Martha my dear

Hold you head up you silly girl
Look what you've done
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you
Silly girl
Take a good look around you
Take a good look you're bound to see
That you and me
Were meant to be
For each other
Silly girl

Hold your hand out you silly girl
Look what you've done
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you
Silly girl

Martha my dear
You have always been my inspiration
Please, be good to me
Martha my love
Don't forget me
Martha my dear

The Kind You Can't Afford

You got palatial mansions
I got rented flat
You got Persia kittens
I got tabby cats
You got your art collection
I got comic books
You use plastic surgery
I stayed the way I look
You travel private jet
I stand by over night
You romance with chandeliers
And I use candle light

Oh but there's one thing I got more
When I'm rich, you're poor
It's that real good loving
The kind you can't afford.

While you're enjoying banquets
I'm eating cafe snacks
You're in designer clothing
I'm in a plastic Mac
You're sipping on Napoleon brandy
I'm slinging a can of beer
You're packing matching luggage
I'm mostly staying here
Your educated accent might beat the local slang
But don't bet your staff and servants against my back street gang

As there's one thing I've got more
When I'm rich you're poor
It's that real good loving
The kind you can't afford

Your dinner jackets and ballroom gowns are warmer than my jeans
Your caviar, no more filling that a can of beans
You go to your classic concerts, I'll be with a local band
Keep your brand new everything, I'll keep my second-hand
In your fitted bathroom, got my water tap
If you think I'm full of envy, I know where the money's at

Ah, there's one thing I got more
When I'm rich you're poor
It's a real good loving
The kind you can't afford

It's a kind
It's a kind you can't afford
It's a kind
It's a kind you can't afford

You got palatial mansions
I got rented flat
Persia kittens
I got tabby cats
Cruising in your Mercedes
I'm broke down in a Ford
You're on a yacht
I'm out on a surfing board

Leaving Home Again

I love my bread
I love my butter
I love the road
I love my lover

Love my freedom
And my cover
I love you

I love to run
Love to holler
Love the ease and the bother

And I live today until tomorrow
'Cause of you
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
But I'm leaving home again
'Til I can't remember where I've been
I'll see you baby there and then
Whenever I get back to where I'm going again

I love the sad
I love the funny
I love the sweet
I love the runny

All I have
Believe me honey
Is 'cause of you

I leave the sun
Keep the showers
I leave the fruit
And keep the flowers

Not for the heroes
Or the cowards
But all for you

I'm leaving home again
'Til I can't remember where I've been
I'll see you baby there and then
Whenever I get back to where I'm going again

The Things I've Seen Today

The things I've seen today
Don't have a name
Some memories
A word cannot explain

They last too long
Or fade too fast
Beginnings change
And endings wane

They lack effect and cause
At times they seem so poor
All they give is pause

The things I've seen today
I'd seen before
Likely in that way
They'll be back once more
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
And sunny days
The scene unfolds a trace
In this game where the player has no face
He plays a hand that lost
To understand at any cost

The things I've seen today
Don't have a name
Some memories
A word cannot explain

But when I finally land across that line
Remember me as one who tried her mind
Every time

Fickle Dove

Fickle dove
Always dreaming at the sky above
Wondering when I bring the one you love
To you

When you coo
For the one and only
Coos for you
Your feathers heed no calling to
When they move to love

You wait for all you want is fate
To make one who call you mate
He's late, but he's heard
Every song, every word
That any other lover bird would choose
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
So here's to love
And any fickle dove who'll do

You wait for all you want is fate
To make one who call you mate
He's late, but he's heard
Every song, every word
That any other lover bird would choose

So here's to love
And any fickle dove who'll do

Lay your sleeping head, my love

( W H Auden's Poem )

Lay your sleeping head, my love
Human on my faithless arm
Time and fever burn away
Beauty from thoughtful children
And the grave proves the child ephemeral
But in my arms till break of day
Let the living creature lie
Mortal, guilty, but to me the entirely beautiful
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
Certainty, fidelity
On the stroke of midnight pass
Like vibrations of a bell
Fashionable madmen
Raise their boring cry
Every penny of the cost
All the dreaded cards foretell
Shall be paid, but from this night
Not a whisper, not a thought
Not a kiss nor look be lost

Beauty, midnight, vision dies
Let the winds of dawn that blow
Softly round your dreaming head
Such a day of sweetness show
Eye and knocking heart may bless
Find the mortal world enough
Noons of dryness see you fed
By the involuntary powers
Nights of insult let you pass
Watched by every human love

Standing on the Rooftop

Standing on the rooftop
Sun is coming up
And all the ones I care for
Are doing fine

I've been running around fields
Making sure things get done
It seems I've never stood up here
To watch the rising of the sun before

I've seen my reflection
Underneath the moon
I've seen all my dreams
Through my tears
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
I have counted on my fears
Drawn my lines through the years
But in all the colors of a kiss
I've never seen a morning clear as this before
Your eyes before my skies would ???

Standing on the rooftop
Sun is coming up
And all the ones I care for
Are doing fine

Through the windows
I see lovers
And wandering minstrels
That flee the night

Up here a hundred miles from cover
I feel that I can see it all
Within the morning light

I Threw It All Away

( Bob Dylan )

I once held him in my arms
He said he'd always stay
But I was cruel
I treated him like a fool
I threw it all away

I once had mountains in the palm of my hand
Rivers that ran through every day
But I must have been mad,
I never knew what I had
Until I threw it all away

Love is all there is, it makes the world go 'round
Love and only love, it can't be denied
No matter what you think about it
You won't be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who's tried
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
So if you find someone who gives you all of his love
Take it to your heart, don't let it stray
One thing is certain
You will surely be hurting
If you throw it all away
If you throw it all away

Love is all there is, it makes the world go 'round
Love and only love, it can't be denied
And no matter what you think about it
You won't be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who's tried

So if you find someone who give you all of his love
Take it to your heart, don't let it stray
One thing is certain
You will surely be hurting
If you throw it all away
If you throw it all away, yeah

The Party Oughta Be Comin' Soon

t's a rainy Sunday, with a wanin' moon
Ernest Hemingway's got an empty plume
Maybe in the mornin' or afternoon
But the party oughta be comin' soon
Lasted too long, dreams too slow
Louis Armstrong's gettin' too sad to blow
Don't wanna forget the good things I used to know
The party ought to be comin' through
Comin' soon, comin' soon
The party oughta be comin' soon
The town's a-gonna sing, swing and swoon
Get the whole wide world in a big saloon
The party ought to be comin' soon

I work bone-tired. The reason's hidden
Man, Richard Pryor wasn't kiddin'
In any little hell hole, you got a livin'
And the party oughta be freely given
There'll be a long parade down every street
Fred Astaire will come down and stomp the boffo feet
Every face is gonna grin on everyone you meet
The party oughta be so concrete
And comin' soon, comin' soon
The party ought to be comin' soon
The town's gonna sing, swing and swoon
Gonna get the whole wide world in a big saloon
Yes, the party oughta be comin' soon

And when the sky opens up and the flowers bloom
When the baby's a groom
I want there to be room
To share my memory of an American tune
The party oughta be comin' soon
Comin' soon, comin' soon
The party oughta be comin' soon
The town's a-gonna sing, swing and swoon
Gonna get the whole wide world in a big saloon
Oh, the party oughta be, uh-huh, comin' soon

There'll be a long parade down every street
Hmm, it'll be comin' soon
Uh-huh. It's a long parade

Superhero

If I were a superhero
I'd know what to do
Wrap you up in moonlight
And stop the world for you

If I were a superhero
I would save the day
If you had a sorrow
'Til our troubles melt away

But here we are
Here we are
A million miles away from where they care
Who we are
Wishing stars everywhere
And I am only human

And if I were a superhero
You wouldn't have to wait
Throw away my amulet and fashionable cape

I'd have the time to wander and leap before I look
I'd be the happy ending to your favorite storybook
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
And could it be you
Who would rescue me
With love

Here we are
Here we are
A million miles away from where they care
Who we are
With wishing stars everywhere
And I am only human

Love In Vain

( Robert Johnson Cover )

I followed him to the station
With his suitcase in my hand
I followed him to the station
With his suitcase in my hand

It's so hard to tell
It's so hard to tell
When all your love's in vain

The train pulled up to the station
And I looked him in the eye
The train pulled up to the station
And I looked him in the eye

Felt so lonesome
I felt so lonesome
Could not help but cry
All my love in vain

When the train, it left the station
It had two lights on behind
The train left the station
With two lights on behind
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
Well, the blue light was my blue
Red light was my mind
All my love in vain

Don't pick a fight with a poet

When you're walking on the street
And the people that you meet
Make you want to start a big fight
'Cause they talk as if they're so right

There is one thing you can remember
In case you haven't heard
You can kill a mighty emperor
But you can not smite a word

So, don't pick a fight with a poet
Don't raise your hand on a whim
Whether it's wrong or it's right
There's a lesson in life
And to learn it, you'll have to give in
'Cause a poet knows you can't win

When you're twitching at the bar
No one knows who you are
And you want to proof them all wrong
You think that you're so strong
You could try to make them listen
You can try to be the boss
But the storyteller is the one who caused the toss
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
So, don't pick a fight with a poet
Don't raise your hand on a whim
Whether it is wrong or right
There'll be a lesson in life
And to learn it, you'll have to give in
'Cause a poet knows you can't win

Older there in the corner, with a Cheshire grin
Making rhyme out of broken hearts cryin' the hymn
He's two tokes from a good time
A toast away from fist flighing
Congregating the world with a paper and pen

So, don't pick a fight with a poet
Don't raise your hand on a whim
Whether it's wrong or right
There's a lesson in life
And to learn it, you'll have to give in
'Cause a poet knows you can't win

Meet Me In Rio

I've wasted some years
Looking for the things that matter
Looking for the things that never appear
‘Til they're gone
And they may never have been
But that was just the beginning

And I've longed for sometime
Time I know that was mine
Looking for you, looking for me
Looking for a place in the world I could be

And I saw you tonight
In a light that could only be
Once in a lifetime
Now I know where I'm destined to go
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
Meet me in Rio
Meet me in Rio
Where the fire shines
In the dark night where the lake and the morning
Aren't more than a warning
That life is either mystery or a mistake
Meet me in Rio
I'm yours

Meet me in Rio
Where the fire shines
In the dark night where the black lake and the morning
Are only a warning
That life is either mystery or a mistake
Meet me in Rio
I'm yours

Meet me in Rio
I'm yours
Meet me in Rio
Meet me in Rio
Meet me in Rio

Ophelia

There's a road
In my mind
I've been watching
For a long time

It's the muddy
Mississippi
And the yellow dandelion

From the Hudson
To Missouri
And the mosses and red clay
I can feel the rhythm call me
From a thousand miles away

Let me go
Down to the river
Let me wander
Where the world has never mind
Let my heart know that horizon
Like a mama's face to her little child
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
I was born of the water
And washed onto the shore
Bid away to the season
Don't want a burden then no more

I'll keep moving for a lifetime
Be as quiet as the earth
When I listen to the water
I want to know what I'm worth

Let me go down to the river
Let me wander where the world has never mind
Let my heart know that horizon
Like a mama's face to her little child

I'm a season
I'm a country
I'm a loser
And a queen
I'm forever
I'm nobody
In the wandering stream

The Way of All Things

I never thought I would
Never wanted to
Never learned how
As other's do

It wasn't me who signed
It wasn't me who ask
And it isn't me
Who writes this madness to hass

Maybe that is the way of all things
The way that a glance carries romance on the quiet of strings
The way that you dance
The way that you sing
Maybe that is the way of all things
I'm always on the run and I hate copy paste for god's sake
It's someone else's night
Someone else's air
Someone else's right
Someone else's prayer

I hear a whisper close
Hold myself away
And when I speak a name
It's what I'd never say

Maybe that is the way of all things
The way that all hopes play jokes and have their stings
The way that you dance
The way that you sing
Maybe that is the way of all things

Whatever way all things must go
May be better we never know

Maybe that is the way of all things
The way that all plans fate in its hands so faithfully brings
The way that you dance
The way that you sing
Maybe that is the way of all things

The Blue Room

Take These Chains

( Hank Williams Cover / written by Fred Rose and Hy Heath )

Take these chains from my heart and set me free
You've grown cold and no longer care for me
All my faith in you is gone but the heartache lingers on
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Take these tears from my eyes and let me see
Just a spark of the love that used to be
If you find somebody new let me find a new love too
Take these chains from my heart and set me free

Give my heart just a word of sympathy
Be as fair to my heart as you can be
Then if you no longer care
For the love that's beating there
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
Take these chains from my heart and set me free

Bye Bye Love

( Felice and Boudleaux Bryant )

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry

Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love, goodbye

There goes my baby
With someone new
He sure looks happy
I sure am blue
He was my baby
Till she stepped in
Goodbye to romance
That might have been

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry

Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love, goodbye

I'm through with romance
I'm through with love
I'm through with counting the stars above
And here's the reason
That I'm so free
My loving baby
Is through with me
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry

Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love, goodbye
Bye bye my love, goodbye
Bye bye my love, goodbye

Changing All Those Changes

( Buddy Holly )

Sweetheart I'm changing all those changes
That I made when I left you
Because I made those changes
When I thought you were untrue

Well now you're gone
And I've found I'm wrong
And there's nothing I can do
Except to change up all those changes that I made when I left you
To change up all those changes that I made when I left you
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
I didn't stop to think
Oh I just left without a care
But now I know I'm wrong
And I can't find you anywhere

Well I should have reconsidered all those things I said I'd do
'Cause now I'm changing all those changes that I made when I left you
I'm changing all those changes that I made when I left you

That's right

Oh now you're gone
And I've found I'm wrong
And there's nothing I can do
Except to change up all those changes that I made when I left you
To change up all those changes that I made when I left you

I'm changing those changes, sweatheart
I'm changing those changes, that's right
I'm changing those changes, sweatheart
I'm changing those changes

Born To Lose

( Ray Charles )

Born to lose, I've lived my life in vain
Every dream has only brought me pain
All my life I've always been so blue
Born to lose and now I'm losing you
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Born to lose, it seems so hard to bear
When I wake and find that you're not there
You've grown tired and now you say we're through
Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Born to lose, I've lived my life in vain
Every dream has only brought me pain
All my life I've always been so blue
Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Guilty

( Randy Newman )

Yes baby, I've been drinking
And I shouldn't come by, I know
But I found myself in troublee, darling
And I had nowhere else to go

I got some whiskey
From the bar man
Got some cocaine
From a friend
I just had to keep on moving
Till I was back in your arms again

I'm guilty, I'm guilty
I'll be guilty
All the rest of my life
How come I never do
What I'm supposed to do
How come nothing that I try to do ever turns out right
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
You know
You know how it is with me baby
You know that I just can't stand myself
It takes a whole lot of medicine
For me to pretend I'm somebody else

I'm guilty, I'm guilty
I'll be guilty
All the rest of my life
How come I never do
What I'm supposed to do
How come nothing that I try to do ever turns out right

You know
You know how it is with me baby
You know that I just can't stand myself
It takes a whole lot of medicine
For me to pretend I'm somebody else

Bird on the Wire

( Leonard Cohen )

Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free

Like a worm on a hook
Like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
And if I, if I have been unkind
I hope that you can just let it go by
And if I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you

Like a baby, stillborn
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone
Who reached out for me

But I swear by this song
And by all that I have done wrong
I will try to make it all up to thee

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch
He said to me "You must not ask for so much"
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door
She cried to me "Why not ask for more"

Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
I have tried in my way to be free

I Can't Stop Loving You

( Don Gibson )

I can't stop loving you
I've made up my mind
To live in memories
Of the lonesome times

I can't stop wanting you
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life
In dreams of yesterday

Those happy hours that we once knew
Tho' long ago, they still make me blue
They say that time heals a broken heart
But time has stood still since we've been apart
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
I can't stop loving you
I've made up my mind
To live in memories
Of the lonesome times

I can't stop wanting you
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life
In dreams of yesterday

They say that time heals a broken heart
But time has stood still since we've been apart

I can't stop loving you
I've made up my mind
Live in memories
Of the lonesome times

I can't stop wanting you
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life
In dreams of yesterday

Gentle On My Mind

( J. Hartford )

Well it's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag rolled up
And stashed behind your couch

And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And keeps you ever gentle on my mind
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind us
Or it's something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking

It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're moving on the back roads by the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind

Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junk yards and the highways come between us
And some other man's crying to his mother
'Cause he turned and I was gone

I still might run in silence
Tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you
Moving on the back roads
By the rivers flowing gently on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from a gurgling
Crackling cauldron in some train yard
My beard a roughening coal pile
And a dirty hat pulled low across my face

And through cupped hands around a tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're waving from the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
Ever smiling ever gentle on my mind

You Don't Know Me

( Cindy Walker and Eddy Arnold )

You give your hand to me
And then you say "Hello"
And I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so

And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
Well, you don't know me
Well you don't know me, no you don't

No one who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
I'm just a friend
That's all I've ever been
Well you don't know me
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away
Beside that lucky guy
You'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
Well, you don't know me

Afraid and shy
I let my chance go by
A chance that you might love me too

You give your hand to me
And then you say "Goodbye."
I watched you walk away
Beside that lucky guy
You'll never ever know
The one who loved you so
Well, you don't know me
You don't know me

Desperados Under The Eaves

( Warren Zevon )

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lying
All the salty margaritas in LA
I'm gonna drink 'em up

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
Until I pay my bill
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves

Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a boy who understands me
Except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went hmmm...

Look away down Gower Avenue
Look away down
Look away down Gower Avenue
Look away down

I Love You So Much It Hurts

 ( Floyd Tillman )

I love you so much it hurts me
Darling, that's why I'm so blue
I'm afraid to go to bed at night
Afraid of losing you

I love you so much, it hurts me
And there's nothing I can do
I long to hold you, my dear
Forever and ever
I love so much it hurts me so
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
I love you so much, it hurts me
And there's nothing I can do
I long to hold you, my dear
Forever and ever
I love so much it hurts me so

Got You On My Mind

(Howard Biggs/Joe Thomas)

Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

Tears begin to fall
Every time I hear your name
Tears begin to fall
Every time I hear your name
Since you went away
Nothing seems to be the same
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
And no matter how I try
My heart keeps telling me
I can't forget you
If ever it should be
You want to come back to me
You know I'd let you

Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

And no matter how I try
My heart keeps telling me
I can't forget you
But if ever it should be
You want to come back to me
I'm gonna let you

Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Got you on my mind
Feeling kind of sad and low
Wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

Wondering where you are
Wondering why you had to go

Tango Till They're Sore

(Tom Waits)

Well you play that Tarantella
All the hounds they start to roar
The boys all go to hell
Then the Cubans hit the floor

They climb along the pipeline
They tango till they're sore
They take apart their nightmares
And they leave them by the door

Oh let me fall out the window
With confetti in my hair
Deal out jacks or better
On a blanket by the stairs
I'll tell you all my secrets
But I lie about my past
So send me off to bed forever more

Make sure they play my theme song
I guess daisies will have to do
Just get me to New Orleans
And paint shadows on the pews
Cut the skin on that pig
Kick the drum and let me down
Put my clarinet beneath your bed
Till I get back in town
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Let me fall out the window
With confetti in my hair
Deal out jacks or better
On a blanket by the stairs
I'll tell you all my secrets
But I lie about my past
So send me off to bed forever more

Yeah she's be all in calico
And the color of a doll
Wave the flag on cadillac day
And a skillet on the wall
Cut me a switch or hold you breath
Till the sun goes down
Write my name on the hood
Send me off to another town

Let me fall out the window
With confetti in my hair
Deal out jacks or better
On a blanket by the stairs
I'll tell you all my secrets
But I lie about my past
So send me off to bed forever more
Send me off to bed forever more

The Highway Kind

(Townes Van Zandt)

My days, they are the highway kind
They only come to leave
But the leavin' I don't mind
It's the comin' that I crave

Pour the sun upon the ground
And stand to throw a shadow
Watch it grow into a night
And fill the spinnin' sky
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Time among the pine trees
It felt like breath of air
Usually I just walk these streets
And tell myself to care

Sometimes I believe me
Sometimes I don't hear
Sometimes the shape I'm in
Won't let me go

I don't know too much for true
My heart knows how to pound
My legs know how to love someone
My voice knows how to sound

And shame that it's not enough
Shame that it is a shame
Follow that circle down
Where would you be

You're the only one I want now
And I never heard your name
Let's hope we meet some day
If we don't it's all the same

I'll meet the ones between us
I'll be thinking about you
And all the places I have been
And why you where not there

Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky (From Now On)

(Allen Toussaint)

Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

I got to be myself and do my thing
A little soul can't do no harm, yeah
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

Now, some may say I've got no class
But I'm doing what I wanna do
So go with me if you can
Or just do what you can do
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Well everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

Oh, never before have I felt so good
Just being natural me
My little hang ups and my little times
But deep inside, I'm free

So let your hair down, get into it
Who's to say what's right or wrong
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah
Everything I do gonna be funky
From now on, yeah

If The Sea Was Whiskey

(Willie Dixon)

If the sea was whiskey and I was a diving duck
If the sea was whiskey and I was a diving duck
I'd dive to the bottom and I don't know when I'd come up

Well I'm just here wondering will a matchbox hold my clothes
Yeah I'm just here wondering will a matchbox hold my clothes
You know if things don't get no better then down the road I go
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Whiskey and beers they don't make me drunk
Whiskey and beers they don't make me drunk
But I believe my elixir is gonna make me pack my trunk

So I sing da
Da, da, da, da, da
And da
Da, da, da, da, da
And da
Da, da, da, da, da

Hard Times Come Again No More

(Stephen Foster)

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears
Oh! Hard times come again no more

It's the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh! Hard times come again no more

While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay
There are frail forms fainting at the door
Though their voices may be silent, their pleading faces say
Oh! Hard times come again no more
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
It's the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh! Hard times come again no more

It's a sigh that is wafted across the troubled waves
It's a wail that is heard across the shore
It's a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
Oh! Hard times come again no more

It's the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh! Hard times come again no more
Oh! Hard times come again no more

Hello Babe

(Kansas Joe McCoy / Lil Green)

Hello, babe, I had to call you up
Hello, baby, I'm feeling up
You know, I have something to tell you
Honey, I still want you to know
I'm sorry
Ain't going to let you worry my life no more

Well, hello, babe, I got to say goodbye
You know, I'm so sorry that I'm about to cry
Although I want you to know
Honey, I still love you so
But I'm sorry
Ain't going to let you worry my life no more

You know, hey, babe, I tried to call you up
And the people in the pad, they said you wasn't up
I had something to tell you
Honey, I still want you to know
I'm sorry
I ain't going to let you worry my life no more

What you say? Huh? Oh-oh!
You're not so upset
You know I got somebody else, too, don't you

You be all right
Oh, take it easy, now
You were runnin' around all this time, too
Ah, just let me get in one last word now

Hello, babe, you know, we got to hang up
Hello, babe, well, I've got to give you up
Oh, but I want you to know, honey, I still love you so
I'm sorry
Ain't going to let you worry my life no more
Goodbye

*** Thanx a lot to Mick from France for this one ***

More Time

(Linton Kwesi Johnson)

Well we marching out the world towards the new century
Armed with the new technology
We getting more and more productivity
Some say things looking up for prosperity
But if everyone is going to get a share this time
Old mentality must be left behind
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
I want the shorter working day
The shorter working week
Longer holidays
Peace and quiet

More time for leisure, for pleasure
For edification and creation
Time to contemplate, to ruminate
And to relay
Gimme more time
More time
We need more time

A full time and abolish unemployment
Revolutionize labour deployment
Full time and abolish overtime
Let everybody get a work this time
We need a higher quality of "livity"
And we need it now
And for everybody
I want the shorter working year
The shorter working life

More time for the husband
More time for the wife
More time for the children
For to train them
For do educate then create

More time for living
More time for life
Give me more time
Give me more time
We need more time

More time to meditate
Concentrate
Ruminate
Recreate
And relate
And create
More time

Shout Sister Shout

(Sister Rosetta Tharpe)

Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Oh yeah
Shout, sister shout
Ah, ah
Tell the whole world what it's all about
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Now there's a reason for living
A reason for dying
A darned good reason why a woman starts crying
A reason for a mole, a reason for a dimple
But there ain't no reason why a man's so simple

Shout, sister shout
Yeah! Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Yeah! Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Hmm, hmm, yeah
Tell the whole world what it's all about

Honey, there's a way to be brilliant
And a way to be a fool
A way to get to heaven
Observe the golden rule
A way to get a sweetheart
No way to get a wife
And the day you quit me baby
That's the day you lose your life

Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Oh yeah
Tell the whole world what it's all about

There's a reason for a mountain
And a reason for a hill
A reason that a doctor
Gives a patient a pill
A reason to dance
A reason to sing
Ain't no reason why a band can't swing

I understand the birds
And you understand the bees
We all understand why a rat eats cheese
I can understand my dog
And you understand your cat
Well fill me full o' rhythm
Can you understand that

Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Shout, sister shout
Hallelujah
Tell the whole world what it's all about

You know I'm gonna shout
Shout Sister
I'm going to shout
Shout Sister
I'm going to shout it out
And tell the world what it's all about

Trampin'

(Traditional)

Trampin', trampin'
Trying to make heaven my home
Trampin', trampin'
Trying to make heaven my home

Never been to heaven
But I've been told
Trying to make heaven my home

The streets up there
Are paved with gold
Trying to make heaven my home
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Trampin', trampin'
Trying to make heaven my home
Trampin', trampin'
I'm trying to make heaven my home

I walked around the city
And what did I see
Trying to make heaven my home

A whole lot of fools
Will look just like me
Trying to make heaven my home

I'm trampin'
Trying to make heaven my home
I'm trampin'
Trampin' Lord
I'm trying to make heaven my home

Anthem

On My Own

Come to, the day is new
Hit the floor, crack the door
And what do I see
Strange kid standing there
Who is that in the mirror - could it be me

Someone opens the bedroom door
Somebody wanders the hall
someone's crossing my kitchen floor
Wasn't there somebody I loved
Who lived here before

Ah! What am I missing here
Ah! Something has disappeared
'Cause I'm all alone
Like a leaf that's blown
Into the great unknown
On my own

Stumbling down the stairs
Run my hands through my hair
What did I say last night
Old friend, weren't you with me then
Promising to hold me tight
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Outside where the day is bright
But nothing is real
I wander the city streets
Trying to remind myself
How it felt to feel

Ah! What am I missing here
Ah! Something has disappeared
'Cause I'm all alone
Like a pebble thrown
Into the great unknown
On my own

Maybe I'll change my style
Try to be nice for a while
Paint on a sincere smile
Get in touch with my inner child

Ah! Something is missing here
Ah! Something has disappeared
'Cause I'm all alone
Like a bird that's flown
Into the great unknown
On my own

Down On Me

My job's gone missing, insurance is a fail
Credit cards stopped coming, my attorney's in jail
Just broke a law I never heard of before
Landlord thinks I'm made and he bust down my door
Used to think I was pretty damn smart
Smart enough to see I'm falling apart
I, I keep going down, down, down, down, down, down, down
It's all coming down on me

My little bit of self esteem has gone up in flames
Teenagers getting wealthy playing video games
The local beat cop keeps giving me that look
Don't even know what drugs I just took
The more I run the more I end up where I start
Stuck in the same place tearing myself apart
I keep going down, down, down, down, down, down, down
It's all coming down on me

I remember back in Waikiki
Doing the Limbo by the sea
"How low can you go?"
The cabana boys teased
Now I'm down on my knees
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
I can't keep this up, but I hear it's worse to stop
If I dry out, lay me to rest at the corner coffeeshop
I don't feel brave and I don't feel free
My only chance at winning is in the lottery
I used to see myself above it
Set myself apart
Now I'm stealing mini-vodkas from the Mighty Mart
I keep going down, down, down, down, down, down, down
It's all coming down on me
I'm going down, down, down, down, down, down, down
It's all coming down on me
Down, down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down, down
How low can you go
Down, down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down, down
One more
Down, down, down, down, down

Party Time

Sally had a cigarette she wanted a doob
Bob said, "You're an addict." Sally said, "Well, that's true."
Bob said, "Sally, tell me, what's so frightening to you?"
"Well, just being in this city and sitting here with you."

A rag tag rehab clinic ain't nowhere to have fun
The TV's always blaring something really dumb
The attendants and the nurses all have clubs and guns
And the windows all got painted so we never see the sun

All this is party time
Try to remember
It's party hearty time
This is party time
Let's get together
Got to have a party
Hearty party all the time

Outside the dogs are fighting, there's screaming in the dark
The sound is terrifying — it puts me into shock
My fears start taking over and growing on my mind
Then the nurses bring more medicine and I lose track of time

"I'm a little concerned," Bob said, "because it seems to me
You really ought to integrate your personalities."
Then Sally said, "But if you listen, Bob, I'm sure that you'll agree
Sometimes there's sense in madness and none in sanity!"
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Yes, this is party time
Try to remember
A party hearty time
This is party time
Getting together
Got to have a party
Hearty party all the time

Some of us are in here 'cause we needed out
Some have all the answers, some have all the doubt
Some have seen too much to remember who they are
We're all just getting better, we've all come really far

I mind my own business in my own little way
My roommate gets the tremors every single day
But I don't even notice I'm so far away
I'm a chemical experiment, but I think I'll be okay

This is party time
Come on, remember
It's party hearty time
If this is party time
To get together
Got to have a party
A hearty party all the time

It's party time
Let's get together
Hearty party time
Come on, it's party time
To get together
Got to have a party
A hearty party all the time

Anthem

The birds, they sang at the break of day
Start again, I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be

Yeah the wars, they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again
Bought and sold and bought again
The dove is never free

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
We asked for signs, signs were sent
The birth betrayed the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood of every government
Signs for all to see

I can't run no more with that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned up a thundercloud
And they're gonna hear from me

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

You can add up the parts
You won't have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart to love will come
But like a refugee

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in

All My Heroes

Here I am awake in a wilderness of lies
Trying to assemble a suitable disguise
Bleary eyed and seeking a sign I recognize
Someone I can count on to be there as my guide
All my heroes were failures in their eyes
Losers, drunkards, fallen saints, and suicides

I feel a fever break underneath my skin
The earth begins to shake, trees bending in the wind
The world is always changing, it's changing in my sleep
For the first time I am praying for my soul to keep
All my heroes were rebels on the run
Plagiarizers, vagabonds, and vagrants, every one
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
But they lit fires in the shadows, all my heroes
Cut pathways through the narrows, all my heroes

Now what am I to do, where am I to go
How am I to pay the debts that I still owe
How am I to shift and rise above the tide
How am I to live without them by my side
All my heroes were smaller than they seemed
Malcontents, dreamers, ghosts in the machine

But they lit fires in the shadows, all my heroes
Cut pathways through the narrows, all my heroes
All my heroes

On A Sunday Afternoon

Nobody's causing any trouble
Nobody's trying to pick a fight
We're all just soaking up this Sunday summer sun
Feeling glad to be alive

Ain't gonna worry 'bout tomorrow
And even less about today
And we're gonna watch the light go down on the horizon
Let every moment slip away
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Jesse tore up his apartment
Just why he wouldn't say
Now he sits there in his bedroom
And he won't come out to play

Oh yeah it's a Sunday afternoon
Now I got Captain Crunch and Reefer and old cartoons
When I get up tomorrow, it'll be too soon
I'm lazing on a Sunday afternoon
Sunday afternoon

The daily news keeps getting stranger
But medical Mary keeps me cool
They all used to say I'd be a failure, but I'm breezing
Although I know sometimes I get a bit confused

Everybody needs a purpose
Some kind of driving force in life
I ain't gonna have the admiration of the world
But I'm already famous in my mind

Martha hitched from San Francisco
Back to her parents' by the Bay
She's doing mandalas and boxing
At least that's what the doctors say

Oh yeah it's a Sunday afternoon
I got Captain Crunch and Reefer and old cartoons
If the aliens are coming, I hope they come soon
We're lazing on a Sunday afternoon
A Sunday afternoon

Oh yeah it's a Sunday afternoon
And I got Captain Crunch and Reefer and old cartoons
When I get up tomorrow, it'll be too soon
I'm lazing on a Sunday afternoon
Yeah it's a Sunday afternoon
Let's sit over here

The Brand New Deal

Yes, it's fun when you're young beneath an innocent sun
And the unicorns play in the fields
And your daddy drives slow with his Cadillac soul
His big strong hands on the wheel
And life is a dream of serene machines
That all seem to care how you feel
But then you grow up and it's never enough
And money's just something to steal
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
It's every man for himself
So grab the wealth
Feel the poor under your heel
It's a brand new deal (a brand new deal)
A brand new deal (a brand new deal)

And then you learn it in school between the lies and the rules
The fairy tales and the charades
They must think you're a fool, you know none of it's true
It's all a rigged game we play
And the banks are thieves with infinite greed
And power is the coin you pay
And then countries are done, it's just money and guns
And cocaine and hookers for days

It's every man for himself
So grab the wealth
Feel the poor under your heel
In the brand new deal (the brand new deal)
The brand new deal (the brand new deal)

Come on now
(Come on, come on, come on, come on)
Come on now
(Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on)

You know the law's on sale when you're too big to fail
And every congressman comes with a price
And the streets are a jail for the weak and the frail
A predator's paradise
And we all know how the cold wind blows
And cuts like the blade of a knife
It's a zero sum game, you gotta learn how to play
Learn how to load the dice

It's every man for himself
So grab the wealth
Feel the poor under your heel
In the brand new deal (the brand new deal)
The brand new deal (the brand new deal)

Yes, it's

Lullaby

I'm afraid the ocean's wide
I'm small
Memories haunt me of a time
Before the war

Blue wind rolling
Red sky dawning
Warm skin glowing
Strange thoughts haunting

Sing with me your lullaby
Baby, please, don't cry
I'll sing it with you until I die
Baby, please, don't cry

This boat that I row, I paddle and row
Towards what I don't know
There's only one thing that keeps me alive
My love for you

Blue wind rolling
Red sky dawning
Warm skin glowing
Strange thoughts haunting
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Sing with me your lullaby
Baby, please, don't cry
I'll sing it with you until I die
Baby, please, don't cry

Ojalá tuviera las palabras para describirte
Corazón de mi corazón
Mi mente es débil, ningún lenguaje puede decirle
Corazón de mi corazón

Blue wind rolling
Red sky dawning
Warm skin glowing
Strange thoughts haunting

Sing with me your lullaby
Baby, please, don't cry
I'll sing it with you until I die
Baby, please, don't cry

Y canta tu canción de cuna
No llores, mi monada
Lo cantaré siempre hasta que muera
No llores, mi monada

Baby, please, don't cry
Baby, please, don't cry

Honey Party

I saw a handsome dancing bee
Under the flowering apple tree
Raising his butt up to the sky
Shaking his wings like a firefly

He wants to dance
He wants to share romance
'Cause he's going to a honey party (to a honey party)
To a honey party (to a honey party)

I asked him, please, show me the way
To his field of flowers by the bay
But he would not let me follow behind
Until I danced with a different mind

He said, "You've got to dance
You've got to share romance
If you're going to a honey party" (to a honey party)
To a honey party (to a honey party)
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
And I woke up behind the sky
In the arms of a man with a golden eye
The place a-buzz with every kind
Of sweet love, laughter and honey-wine

And I danced
(Come on, come on, come on, come on)
I did share romance
And I know about the honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)
(To a honey party)

Now I think back to that summer of song
I thought would last my whole life long
I remember the love that made me strong
I'd be so glad if you'd come along

You've got to dance
You've got to share romance
If you're going to a honey party (to a honey party)
To a honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)
A honey party (to a honey party)

The Ghosts Of Tomorrow

Here we are
Gathered here
Dressed in our finest drinking whiskey and beer
Gathered to pay tribute
To the ghosts of a tomorrow
That never comes

Hey bartender
Put that bottle down
My head's already spinning way too fast around
But I'll make one final toast
To the ghosts of a tomorrow
That never comes

May you all be healthy
May you all be strong
May you find yourselves right where you belong
May your adventures take you there
When the troubles come may you be spared
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Now I never watch the time
But time's watching me
And I've had enough of running from my memories
If I stay here, I'll be one
Of the ghosts of a tomorrow
That never comes

May you all be healthy
May you all be strong
May you find yourselves right where you belong
May your adventures take you there
When the troubles come may you be spared

Now I never watch the time
But time's watching me
And I've had enough of running from my memories
If I stay here, I'll be one
Of the ghosts of a tomorrow
That never comes

If I stay here, I'll be one
Of the ghosts of a tomorrow
That never comes

We Might As Well Dance

It's easy to see the things going wrong now
It's easy to wallow in a sad song
It's easy to cry over all that is gone now
But I believe that we must carry on

I hear you saying that our best days are past us
I've seen you walking through the rubble and stone
Yes, I know there's a list of disasters
But time is gonna soothe the soul

So we might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance
We'll be leaving here soon
We might as well dance
While the river is high
We might as well dance
Before you kiss me goodbye

The times are changing and tensions are rising
But fear can never be our guiding light
I'm not a fool, I know what hate is disguising
And only love can bring the will to fight
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
So we might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance
We'll be leaving here soon
We might as well dance
While the river is high
We might as well dance
Before you kiss me goodbye

We might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance
We'll be leaving here soon
We might as well dance
While the river is high
We might as well dance
Before you kiss me goodbye

We might as well dance
In the light of the moon
We might as well dance
We'll be leaving here soon
We might as well dance
While the river is high
We might as well dance
Before you kiss me goodbye

Sur mes cahiers d'écolier
Sur mon pupitre et les arbres
Sur le sable, sur la neige
J'écris ton nom

Sur toutes les pages lues
Sur toutes les pages blanches
Pierre, sang, papier ou cendre

In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Sur les images dorées

Sur la solitude nue
Sur les marches de la mort

Sur la santé revenue
Sur le risque disparu
Sur l'espoir sans souvenir
J'écris ton nom

Et par le pouvoir d'un mot
Je recommence ma vie
Je suis né pour te connaître
Pour te nommer

Last Night When We Were Young

(Harold Arlen & Yip Harburg)

Last night
When we were young
Love was a star
A song unsung

Life was so new
So real, so right
Ages ago
Last night

Today the world is old
You flew away
And time grew cold

But where is that star
That seems so bright
Ages ago
Last night

To think that spring had depended
On merely this a look, a kiss
To think that something so splended
Could slip away in one little daybreak
In the real world did you copy and paste too?
Well, now I'll reminisce
And recollect the sighs and the kisses
The arms that clung
When we were young last night
Last night

To think that spring had depended
On merely this a look, a kiss
To think that something so splended
Could slip away in one little daybreak

Oh now I'll reminisce
And recollect the sighs and the kisses
The arms that clung
When we were young
Last night
Last night

Let's Walk

Find True Love

Oh let's go down to the bayou and find true love

Listen to the blues and the gospel of Jesus
Feel the summer sunshine in the southern breezes
Hear the little babies whimper and cry
Make a little promise learn how to die

Oh let's go out to the levy and find true love
Listen to the brass bands do the second line
Pick a little guitar spill a little wine
Hear the little babies whimper and cry
Make a little promise and learn how to die

I promise to be open to feel joy and pain
The only way to make a life is to fail and try again

So let's go up to the hilltop and find true love
Gaze upon the season from above the treeline
Pick a little fresh corn spill a little moonshine
Hear the little babies whimper and cry
Make a little promise and learn how to die

Oh let's go on to the shoreline and find true love

Listen to the ocean thunder in the sky
Feel a little empty run a little dry
Hear the little babies whimper and cry
Make a little promise and learn how to die

I promise to be open to feel joy and pain
The only way to make a life is to fail and try again

Oh let's go down to the bayou and find true love

Listen to the blues and the gospel of Jesus
Feel the summer sunshine in the southern breezes
Hear the little babies whimper and cry
Make a little promise make a little promise

Make a little promise learn how to die

How I Wish

How I wish I could bring tenderness, leavening
And to bare the fact of each heinous act
To which I've been a part
Oh my black American heart

What I'd give and unlearn
Should some peace & concern
Fill this empty dread
On the wire we tread
Between fear and disgrace
Oh my red American face

Would my life be in vain
If in strife
Some small pain
I gave up my right
To this greed and spite
Then what might begin
Oh my white American skin
No more

Endlessly journeying
Yet to hear freedom ring
Must we all be tossed
On our nation's cross
Before the Truth is whole
Oh my lost American soul
No more

Let's Walk

Let's walk
Let's roll
Let us advance our mortal bodies up where hearts and minds will go

Let's lead
And behold
Progress within the peaceful test of power growing as we go

You reap
What you sow
We keep our deepest love at hand and never shall we let it go

Let's walk
Let's roll
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know

Let's walk
Let's roll
In step we bless togetherness from far and wide from heel to toe

We'll see
And we'll know
We climb the mountainside where seeds were planted oh so long ago

It's deep
Down below
With feet and hands aligned we stand for love (yes love) is what we show

Let's walk
Let's roll
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know

Let's walk
Let's roll
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know

Let's walk
Let's roll
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know
You are the people of my heart and soul I want the world to know

Please Come On Inside

The wind is howling
The moon is wide
I know you're lonesome
Please come on inside
Please come on inside

I hear you growling
I can feel your pride
Let me ease your suffering child
Please come on inside
Please come on inside

Come on come in
Let the healing begin
Here where it's warm and it's dry
We'll sleep into the morning light
Gonna learn to live again by and by
The road is long but I will be strong
Enough for the two of us to get by
So sleep into the morning child
Gonna learn to live again by and by
Come on inside
Come on in
Please come on in
Come on inside
Come on in
Please come on in

It's hard out prowlin
I know cause I've tried
It's a mean old man's world out there
Please come on inside
Please come on inside
Come on inside

Come on come in
Let the healing begin
Here where it's warm and it's dry
We'll sleep into the morning light
Gonna learn to live again by and by
The road is long but I will be strong
Enough for the two of us to get by
Come on inside
Come on in
Please come on in
Come on inside
Come on in
Please come on in

Come on
Come on
Come on in
Come on
Come on
Come on in

Please
Come on
Please come on in

Please
Come on in
Please come on in

Please
Come on in
Please come on in

Please
Come on in
Please come on in...

Blues For Heaven

If the sun was always shining and the sky was always blue
I wouldn't have to worry all day (She wouldn't have to worry all day)
If I could see a silver lining in the cloud that blocks my view
I wouldn't have to worry all day (She wouldn't have to worry all day)
I would bloom like fields of wildflowers and dance the daylight hours away

Heaven oh Heaven
Dreaming of how sweet it must be
Heaven oh Heaven
Make room for a sinner like me

If the fires were always glowing and the evenings sweet and long
I wouldn't have to worry all night (She wouldn't have to worry all night)
If the tap was overflowing and the air a gentle song
I wouldn't have to worry all night (She wouldn't have to worry all night)
I would whistle like the ocean beckoning to the magic moonlight

Heaven oh Heaven
Dreaming of how sweet it must be
Heaven oh Heaven
Make room for a sinner like me

If the world was all inviting and love was always pure
I'd never have to worry no more (She'd never have to worry no more)
If prospects were exciting and promises true and sure
I'd never have to worry no more (She'd never have to worry no more)
But then I'd be in heaven wondering what the worry was for

Heaven oh Heaven
Dreaming of how sweet it must be
Heaven oh Heaven
Make room for a sinner like me

Heaven oh Heaven
Dreaming of how sweet it must be
Heaven oh Heaven
Make room for a sinner like me

Et Puis

Je n'm'en fais pas des gênants
Je n'm'ennuie pas avec ces gens
Pas d'embarras, ni d' désaccord
Mon apathie j'y tiens bien fort
Après le repas au restaurant
J'avale mon vin nonchalamment
Monsieur-sans-l'sou me demande une pièce

Me And The Mosquito

I love attention and acceptance, I'm human after all
Companionship can be transcendent with any creature, big or small
But I would rather be unknown to one persistent chaperone
Make me incognito when it's me and the mosquito

I like to think I'm kinda playful, disinclined to confrontation
My heart is tenderly respectful of every living incarnation
But when this minute sucker bites, I won't be reading its last rites
Finito when it's me and the mosquito

No, no, no getting under my skin
No, no, no, I'll do you in
Si te quedas aquí, si te quedas así
Un golpecito, no más mosquito

Every species somehow must by Mother Nature come alive
But if it's just the two of us, I'd rather only one survive

Every mortal has its mystery and some redeeming feature
There is inherent quality to every natural living creature
But I won't know no doggone rest until I kill this little pest
No veto when it's me and the mosquito

No, no, no getting under my skin
No, no, no, I'll do you in
Si te quedas aquí, si te quedas así
Un golpecito, no más mosquito

Nothing Personal

You violate me
I feel you hate me
You say it's nothing personal

You break into me
Take and undo me
Then say it's nothing personal

You should take it on, take it on
You can't take it back, so follow through
Pick up your big boy balls and
Abuse yourself amuse yourself

You rip and tear me
Unzip and wear me
You make it irreversible

Have you no feel of
Something like real love
Must you be so unmerciful

You should take it on, take it on
You can't take it back, so follow through
Pick up your big boy balls and
Abuse yourself amuse yourself

You should take it on, take it on
You can't take it back, so follow through
Pick up your big boy balls and
Abuse yourself amuse yourself

Here in the ending
No more pretending
Isn't it always personal

Showman Dan

Hey papa stop swappin' pop, talkin' shop
Let the beat drop and do that dance
Shake it up, break it up, long as you can wake it up
It's right in your hands
You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

You're playin' it cool baby whoop you're a hoot and I'm in the loop
I got the scoop when I saw you swoop on down
Startin' a love affair to fill the air and people come from everywhere
To drink up your sound
You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

High in the sky there's a spot light right on ya
Shining as it follows you round
My oh my, first you make them cry
Then you turn every frown upside down

Oh daddy, what a treat, you turned a mean city scene into a sweet street
Down home groove
Feet tapping, trees clapping, branches in the breeze slapping
Backbeats deep and smooth
You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

Swing it high, swing it low
Wherever you been, wherever you go
It's ringing true, it's ringing through
However you do what you can do
You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan
High in the sky there's a spot light right on ya
Shining as it follows you round
My oh my, first you make them cry
Then you turn every frown upside down

Oh daddy, what a treat, you turned a mean city scene into a sweet street
Down home groove
Feet tapping, trees clapping, branches in the breeze slapping
Backbeats deep and smooth
You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

You've got to know you're the man
Go on and show em, Showman Dan

Take Care

Food is good if it's organically grown
Without pesticides, plastic wrap, or Styrofoam
Growth hormones or horrific conditions
For hard working humans or the cows or the chickens
And if it's from far away, hydrogenated
Farmed or wild, but unregulated
Refined, streamlined, bottled or canned
Don't try it, don't buy it from your fellow man

Perhaps you should abstain
This is for your health
I know it sounds insane
But please take care of yourself

No. I don't recommend a morose existence
Life is an art, and perspective needs distance
But you gotta get lean and scrappy
And fight if you're gonna begin to get living right

Water is great if it's clear and clean
Free of heavy metals and polyethylene
Filtered, fresh, locally sourced
And it doesn't catch fire in your sink, of course
Clothing's all right when sustainably made
But find me a seam that's truly fair trade
Meaning well paid, unionized, grown-up souls
Fulfilling desires, values and goals

Perhaps you should abstain
This is for your health
I know it sounds insane
But please take care of yourself

No. I don't recommend a morose existence
Life is an art, and perspective needs distance
But you gotta get lean and scrappy
And fight if you're gonna begin to get living right

Now, living's okay if you can really survive
Without time to enjoy nor relations to thrive
If you wanna be selfish, cutthroat, and mean
Join the elite, take the cash, be obscene!
No wonder I'm always lost in a daze
Escaping in movies and games and malaise
I wonder if anything ever will change
What strange choices we've made

Perhaps you should abstain
This is for your health
I know it sounds insane
But please take care of yourself

No I don't recommend a morose existence
Life is an art, and perspective needs distance
But you gotta get lean and scrappy and fight
If you're gonna begin to get living right

Hey let's have a party
I'll bring food and water
And we can eat and laugh
And ?? and talk about, uh
Where we're gonna live
And uh, how we're gonna live and
Or whatever you want you know
Habve some fun
Take care of ourselves
Hi mum

Non Albums Tracks

American

Hard ball hitting with a baseball bat
Kick up your heels, kid, leave 'em all flat
Kissing your mama and missing your dad
Home is, home is
Hoping my home is where I'm at

What does it mean
To be American
Land of the brave
And the free
What does it mean
To be American
To me

Here come the law and order, stick 'em up, Jack
Pick up your wheels, kid, and be a witness to fact
There's a soul in the feet, but no heart in the hat
And skin tint is skin flint
'Cause color's too bright to look at

What does it mean
To be American
Home of the free
And the true
What does it mean
To be American
To you

Big wide open skies
For your big wide open eyes
Keep it real now
Don't you tell me no more lies
As if the slate is clean

I'm gonna read my books, I'm gonna wrap 'em up tight
I can educate myself on the fight
It's never too late to learn a new word right
But there's sweet grace for the human race
If we can make it through this hardest night

What does it mean
To be American
Home of the brave
Land of the free
What does it mean
To be American
To you and me

Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea

( Popular song / Toots Thielemans feat. Madeleine Peyroux / One More For The Road LP )

I don't want you
But I hate to lose you
You've got me in between
The devil and the deep blue sea

I forgive you
'Cause I can't forget you
You've got me in between
The devil and the deep blue sea

I want to cross you off my list
But when you come knocking at my door
Fate seems to give my heart a twist
And I come running back for more

I should hate you
But I guess I love you
You've got me in between
The devil and the deep blue sea

I want to cross you off my list
But when you come knocking at my door
Fate seems to give my heart a twist
And I come running back for more

I should hate you
But I guess I love you
You've got me in between
You've got me in between
You've got me in between
The devil and the deep blue sea

Getting Some Fun Out Of Life

( Edgar Leslie / Joseph A. Burke / Live 97 )

When we want to love, we love
When we want to kiss, we kiss
With a little petting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

When we want to work, we work
When we want to play, we play
In a happy setting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

Maybe we do the right things
Maybe we do the wrong
Spending each day
Just wending our way along

So when we want to sing, we sing
When we want to dance, we dance
You can do your betting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

We love
When we want to kiss, we kiss
With a little petting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

When we want to work, we work
And when we want to play, we play
In a happy setting, we're getting
Some fun out of life

Maybe we do the right things
Maybe we do the wrong
Spending each day
Just wending our way along

But when we want to sing, we sing
When we want to dance, we dance
You can do your betting, we're getting
Some fun out of life
Fun out of life
Some fun out of life

Oh baby, give your mama one smile
Now Smile

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

(Michel Legrand Feat. Madeleine Peyroux)

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the Yuletide gay
Next year all our troubles will be miles away

Once again, as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Will be near to us once more

Someday soon, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Someday soon, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now

He's got me goin'

( Bessie Smith Cover / Live 97 )

Don't know what come over me
Done lost my self control
He's the sugar in my tea
The jelly in my roll

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
But I don't know just where I'm headed for

Oh gee, I've got a lovin' man
One of them handsome brutes
He's built according to a plan
Too bad when it suits

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
But I don't know where I'm headed for

Got a heart for just one man
Knows how to get to it
For he's got the only key
That's the perfect fit

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
But I don't know where I'm headed for

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
I don't know where I'm headed for

And I lay and listen to the clock,
Ticks loud as a drum,
I hear the crowing of a cock
Still my man ain't come

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
I don't know just where I'm headed for

I can't sleep a doggone wink
Unless he's by my side
My mind's so different I just can't think
Without my easy ride

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
But I don't know where I'm headed for

He's got me goin'
Got me goin'
But I don't know where I'm headed for

I Hear Music

( Billie Holiday Cover / Live 2009 )

I hear music
Mighty fine music
The murmur of a morning breeze up there
The rattle of the milkman on the stair
Sure that's music
Mighty fine music
The singing of a sparrow in the sky
The perking of the coffee right near by
That's my favorite melody
You my angel, phoning me
I hear music
Mighty fine music
And anytime I think my world is wrong
I get me out of bed and sing this song

I'll Be Seeing You

( Billie Holiday Cover / Live 2009 )

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through

In that small cafe
The park across the way
The children's carousel
The chestnut trees
The wishin' well

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day
In every thing that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day
In every thing that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

( Hank Williams cover / Till Brönner feat. Madeleine Peyroux / Oceana LP )

Hear the lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
And the midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever hear a Robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

*** Thanx a lot to Jose for this one ***

I've got rhythm

( George Gershwin / Live 97 )

I've got rhythm
I've got music
I've got my man
Who could ask for anything more

I've got flowers
In green pastures
I've got my man
Who could ask for anything more

Ol'Man Trouble
And I never mind him
You won't find him
'Round my door

I've got rhythm
I've got music
I've got my man
Who could ask for anything more
Who could ask for anything more

I've got rhythm
I've got music
I've got my man
Who could ask for anything more

I've got flowers
In green pastures
I've got my man
Who could ask for anything more

Ol'Man Trouble
And I won't mind him
You won't find him
'Round my door

I've got rhythm
I've got music
I've got myself man
Who could ask for anything more
Who could ask for anything more
Who could ask for anything more
Who could ask for anything more

I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate

( A.J. Piron. / Live 97 )

Well I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate
Shake it like jelly on a plate
My mama wanted to know last night
How sister Kate could do it oh so nice
Now, all the boys in the neighborhood
Knew Kate could shimmy, and it's almost good
I may be late but I'll be up to date
When I can shimmy like my sister Kate
I mean, shake it like my sister Kate

Well I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate
Shake it like jelly on a plate
My mama wanted to know last night
How sister Kate could do it oh so nice
Now, all the boys in the neighborhood
Knew Kate could shimmy, and it's almost good
I may be late but I'll be up to date
When I can shimmy like my sister Kate
I mean, shake it like my sister Kate...

Keep Me In Your Heart

( Warren Zevon / Keep me in your heart for a while LP )

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

When you wake up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for awhile
There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

My Bucket's Got A Hole In It

( Williams Hank Jr Cover / Live 97 )

Now I'm standing on a corner
Got my bucket in my hand
I'm looking for a woman
That ain't got no man

And my bucket's got a hole in it
Yes my bucket's got a hole in it
My bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer

There ain't no use
Of me workin' so hard
When I got a woman
In the boss man's yard.

And my bucket's got a hole in it
Yes my bucket's got a hole in it
My bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer

Well, I went upon the mountain
I looked down in the sea
I seen the crabs and the fishes
Oh doing the be-bop-bee

And my bucket's got a hole in it
Yes my bucket's got a hole in it
Oh my bucket's got a hole in it
I can't buy no beer...

Nobody Loves A Fat Girl

( Jim Croce Cover / Live 97 )

Nobody loves a fat girl
But oh how a fat girl can love
Nobody seems to want me
I'm just a truck upon the highway of love

I'm all alone inside of my form
When ev'ry ounce of me is dyin' to keep somebody warm
Nobody loves a fat girl
But oh how a fat girl can love

Nobody loves a fat girl
But oh how a fat girl can love
Nobody seems to want me
I'm just a truck upon the highway of love
The only game I can get the boys to play
Is to have them sit around and try to guess how much I weigh
Nobody loves a fat girl
But oh how a fat girl can love, pretty mama
Oh how a fat girl can love

Noël despoir

(Michel Legrand "Noël! Noël!! Noël!!! LP" / Rufus Wainwright feat. Madeleine Peyroux, Carla Bruni, Émilie Simon & Iggy Pop)

L'amour
L'amour

No Meanness

It's gonna take a lotta heart to stop the bleeding
Take off our artful cloaks and drape the sand
Remember we're all feeble feeling
Despite our better judgment in the end

But we can choose to make the rules
As History laments and preaches
For every day that I'm a fool
There's a day that teaches

No meanness
No judgment
No envy
No fear
No shame

I wouldn't wanna leave the world without you
Hearing all that you need to hear me say
You've got the truth inside to lead you
Never let 'em take your truth away

Hey, we've all been around enough to learn
What we want is to understand
You can only give all you have
And live to try again

With no meanness
(No meanness)
No judgment
(No meanness, no envy, no fear)
No envy
No fear
No shame

No meanness
(No meanness)
No judgment
(No envy, no fear)
No greed
No fear
No shame

Riffin' The Scotch

( Billie Holiday Cover / Live 97 )

I jumped out of the tryin' pan
And right into the fire
When I lost me a cheatin' man
And got a no-count liar

Swapped the old one for a new one
Now the new one's breakin' my heart
I jumped out of the tryin' pan
And right into the fire
Lord, into the fire

I jumped out of the tryin' pan
And right into the fire
When I lost me a cheatin' man
And got a no-count liar

Swapped the old one for a new one
Now the new one's breakin' my heart
I jumped out of the tryin' pan
And right into the fire
Lord, into the fire

Rock Island Line

( Johnny Cash / Live 97 )

Down the Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road
The Rock Island Line is the road to ride
The Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road
If you ride you gotta ride her like you find her
Get your ticket at the station for the Rock Island Line

Well the trip on train it may be long
Thank you very much for this good song

Down the Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road
The Rock Island Line is the road to ride

Swing brother swing

( Billie Holiday Cover / Live 2009 )

Deep rhythm captivates me
Hot rhythms stimulate me
Can't help but swing it boy
Swing it brothers swing
Don't stop to diddle daddle
Stop this foolish prattle
Come on swing me boy
Swing it brothers swing
Raring to go and there aint nobody
Gonna hold me down
Say listen boy

Hurry up and send me
Let me go to town
Stop this diddle daddle
And this foolish prattle
Come on kill me boy
Swing it brothers swing

Deep rhythms captivate me
Hot rhythms stimulate me
Can't help but swing it boy
Swing it brothers swing
Don't stop to diddle daddle
Stop this foolish prattle
Come on send me Count
Swing it brothers swing
Rarin' to go and there aint nobody
Gonna hold me down
Say listen boy
Hurry up and send me
Let me go to town
Stop this diddle daddle
And this foolish prattle

The Golden Touch

(Jazz Loves Disney 2 - A Kind Of Magic)

One billion two million twenty-five thousand nine hundred and eight

one billion two million twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ten
one billion two million twenty-five thousand nine hundred and atchum

Alright
I'm known as rich King Midas
And when you look at me
You'll see a king who knows a thing
About his treasury

I never cared for women
I never cared for wine
But when I count a large amount of money
It's devine

Gold, gold, gold
I worship it, I love it
Gold, gold, gold
I wish I had more of it

My love for shining gold is such
That I could never have too much
I wish that everything I touched
Would turn to gold, gold, gold, ah

I love it
I love it, I love it
Oh yes
It's really the greatest
Ah, ah

Gold, gold, gold
I worship it, I love it
Gold, gold, gold
I wish I had more of it

My love for shining gold is such
I could never have too much
I wish that everything I touched
Would turn to gold, gold, gold, gold, gold, gold
It's the greatest

The Reefer Song (You're a Viper)

( Stuff Smith Cover / Live 97 )

I dreamed about reefer five foot long
Mighty Mez but not too strong
You'll be high but not for long
If you're a viper, oh

I am the queen of everything
Got to get high before I swing
Hear the bells ring ding dong ding
If you're a viper

When your throat gets dry, you know you're high
Everything is fine and dandy
You're goin' down to the candy store
Blow your cork on peppermint candy

And then you know your dad might have said
Don't give a damn if you don't pay the rent
The sky is high and so am I
If you're a viper

When your throat gets dry, you know you're high
Everything is dandy
You're goin' down to the candy store
Blow your cork on peppermint candy

And then you know your dad might have said
Don't give a damn if you don't pay the rent
The sky is high and so am I
If you're a viper
