B i o g r a p h y
(by Andy Kellman & Thom Jurek)

Nostalgia 77 features the production work of Benedic Lamdin, who shifts between relying upon samples and musicians as raw material for his processed tracks. After some singles for the 7Sevens label, he released his first album, Songs for My Funeral, in 2004, and followed that with 2005's The Garden, issued on Ubiquity; Borderlands and Sevens & Eights: Recorded Live at the Jazz Cafe in 2006; and then Everything Under the Sun the next year. In 2008, the album Weapons of Jazz Destruction was released by Tru Thoughts under the Nostalgia 77 Octet moniker. Landin (who played guitar) expanded his concept group to include drums, upright bass, brass, reeds, and winds. After a collection entitled Nostalgia 77's One Offs, Remixes & B-Sides, in 2009 Landin enlisted British jazz and improv legends pianist Keith Tippett and vocalist Julie Tippetts for Nostalgia 77 Sessions, Vol. 1, another full-ensemble recording that featured upright bass, saxophones, guitar, and drums in addition to piano and vocals. Landin also acted as producer and engineer for the date. Throughout the latter half of the 21st century's first decade, Landin concerned himself with a lot of production work on albums by Jeb Loy Nichols, Elizabeth Parks, Larry Stabbins, Alice Russell, Sara Mitra, Fringe Magnetic, and Golden Age of Steam. In the early spring of 2011, Nostalgia 77 released the most eclectic and far-reaching album to date with Sleepwalking Society (on Tru Thoughts), featuring German vocalist Josa Peit; the set walked the line between classic Ellingtonian jazz, British folk, and even blues

The Garden

Seven Nation Army

( The White Stripes cover )

Alice Russell :

I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette

And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone

Don't want to hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell

And if I catch it coming back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that ain't what you want to hear
But that's what I'll do

And the feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home

I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera for evermore
I'm gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore

And I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding
And I'm bleeding right before the lord
All my words are gonna bleed from me
And I will think no more

And the stains coming from my blood
Tell me go back home
Yeah back home

Everything Under The Sun

*** Thanx a lot to Richard for these lyrics ***

Wildflower

Wildflower
In winter you sleep
Cold in the ground
Never a sound
Wildflower

Wildflower
In springtime you wake
Leaves reaching up to the sun
Starting to speak
Wildflower, wildflower

You love the ??? of your kind
We love the valleys and mountains
Summer is here
Wildflower, wildflower, wildflower
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Now autumn runs red
No warm rays are shed
But you left a beautiful seed asleep in your bed
Wildflower, wildflower, wildflower
Wildflower, wildflower, wildflower

Stop To Make A Change

There ain't only one way to start a new beginning
It should be nice and easy if everybody's willing
You could take a tablet, see a doctor or a shrink
You could hit a reefer, the needle or a drink

Stop right there, you wanna make a change, listen here
And you will start to recognise that there ain't only one way to start a new beginning

We've got to earn a living, we've got to speak our minds
Got to be relaxed for we've got to get up early
Life just ain't that easy but we've got to change our minds
That's the bottom line, it's all the same old story
Now everywhere you turn, boys and girls are working for the man
Impossible equation, a lunatics vocation
Armies on the march and an infidel's in charge
The planet's upside down, the world is out of rhythm
Our dream's are only songs that's falling off the horizons to the earth

Stop right there, you wanna make a change
The planet's upside down and the band is out of rhythm
The band is upside down and the planet's out of time
You wanna make a change you gotta stop to make it better

Change to make it stop, stop to make a change
The band is out of planets and the rhythm's out of time
The rhythm makes a change and the band is upside down
You gotta make a change if you want to make it better
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
There ain't only one way to start a new beginning
It should be nice and easy if everybody's willing
You could take a tablet, see a doctor or a shrink
You could hit a reefer, the needle or a drink

Stop right there, you wanna make a change, listen here
And you will start to recognise that there ain't only one way to start a new beginning

Little Steps

We take little steps, it's easier
We take little breaths and learn to talk
We dream little dreams of fantastic scenes
And we wish on little stars twinkling
We take little sips on magic drinks
And close our eyes and watch kaleidoscopes
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
We watch little waves, for what little spray
Reach out little hands, give thanks and praise
For the little things and the simple things
For the wind, the sea, the sun

And now we sit upon the earth
Picking fruit from little trees
See the birds spread little wings
And watch clouds dance around the sun

Eastwind

Eastwind is blowing
Black clouds away
And the cobwebs in the corners
She blows at night, she blows the day

Eastwind is blowing
The storms they come
It blows through the bitter night
Evil's on the run
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
From the desert to the mountains
Through the valleys to the seas
Across the oceans to the city
Eastwind, the wind of change

Quiet Dawn

Your frame is a slender tree
And hands two sprawling leaves
Your mouth, a quiet dawn
Your hair, a waterfall
Your eyes, stars astral light
Slow whispers of infinity
That draw me closer to your body night by night

And my love is a satellite
Spinning, spinning
Spinning, spinning

Your questions are impossible
Galaxies and moonlight flow
Angry tides and fallow lands
And our universe expands
Your footprints are maps to me
Under sunlight speckled woods
You'll feed me in the failing light
A simple meal of gravity
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
And all my love is a satellite
Spinning, spinning
Spinning, spinning
Spinning, spinning, spinning

You reached into space for me
Held my orbit evenly, certain of infinity
But moons and comets die eventually
And when we go, go in peace
When our spirits go free
And the world's only grey
Quiet dawning galaxy oh

And my love is a satellite
Spinning, spinning
Spinning, spinning, spinning
Oh spinning

Steps Of The Sun

I remember the time long before the earth
Long before the stars and the universe
I remember a time before civilisation
Before wars, before myself

I remember a day before the pharaoh's reign
When spirits lied and echoes played
And when we arrived from our journey weary
We will find a land so divine on the steps of the sun
Rob from always on the run dot net is so bad and copy paste is a sin
I remember the time long before the earth
Long before the stars and the universe
When we didn't fight for right or wrong
When we listen to the earth and the childrens song

I remember a time in a land far away
When spirits lie and echoes play
And now we arrive from our journey weary
And find a land so divine on the steps of the sun

The Sleepwalking Society

Sleepwalker

You’re not always born on the good foot
Can’t always open the right door
You walk with your eyes closed
You’re gonna hit the wall
Or fall into a hole
When you're in that hole

Open your eyes
Sleepwalker
Sleepwalker

Some are lucky but you’ve got to know
There ain’t always be a way back home
Like a puppet on a string
He’s just trying to do his thing
Make his own way
Live day to day
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Open your eyes
Sleepwalker
Sleepwalker
Sleepwalker
Sleepwalker

People turning back on you
'Cause you ain't playing by the rules
You say life is a game
I say it's a shame

You must play
Your own game
Can't sound the same
You must open your eyes
Sleepwalker
You are a sleepwalker
Sleepwalker

Beautiful lie

Lie lie lie lie lie
Lie lie lie lie lie

Beautiful forgetting
Memories
You flee the trees
Like fickle leaves
With nothing more to say

You don't need to run away
Or be afraid
Or even stay
You don’t need to be brave
To stay
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Lie lie lie lie lie
Lie lie lie lie lie

Beautiful forgetting
All those memories
You flee the mind in a tear
To the weir downstream
Then you dry like a photograph

You don't need to be afraid
Or run away
Or even say
You don’t need to be brave
To stay

Lie lie lie lie lie
Lie lie lie lie lie

Lie lie lie lie lie
Lie lie lie lie lie

Simmerdown

Simmerdown, simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down
Simmerdown, simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down

When you can't wake up
When you can't sleep
You grow tired
Drifting down stream

Simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down
Simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Children singing from your hymnal
Lay your head down
Father singing swing low, swing low
Lay your head down

You can leave the door ajar
In the morning I'll be there
Fast asleep by your side
Breathing deep

Simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down
Simmerdown, simmerdown
Simmerdown, lay your head down

Simmerdown, lay your head down
Lay your head
Simmerdown, lay your head
Lay your head, lay your head
Down

Golden morning

Golden morning
Golden morning
Golden morning

We walk in
Golden morning
Out across the dew
Take strength
Take strength
To catch the light
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Golden morning
Golden morning
Golden morning

Blue shadow

I've got a blue shadow
Falling from a yellow flower
In the window facing east
Clock stopped on the hour

It's just another day
Pretty as the last
So how can I feel down
When there's so much love around
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
I've got a blue shadow

Weave me a blanket out of wire
And all the pretty scraps
And memories
That fall between the cracks

Preserve the happy times
And keep the cold from me
So I'll pull it up and lay low
Down with my blue shadow

I've got blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
I've got a blue shadow

I've got a blue
Blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
Blue shadow, blue shadow
I've got a blue shadow

Mockingbird

Father, father
You're gonna be a father now
Father, father
You're gonna be a father now
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
You're all grown up
You never felt more like a child

First you learn to cry
Then you learn to talk
First you need a hand
Then you learn to walk

Then you say I love you
Somewhere in the dark

Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby
Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby

And who will mind the mockingbird
Who will mind the mockingbird

Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby
Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby

Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby
Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby

Lullaby, lullaby
Who’ll sing lullaby
Lullaby, lullaby

Cherry

Cherry blossom
Should be your name
You were gone
As soon as you came
When the first wind shook your branch
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
Cherry blossom
Won’t you stay
Just for another
Another day
Or in the morn would you be gone

Away, away

Perfect ain't perfect anymore
Perfect ain't perfect I heard him say
I’d rather leave than grieve for you
And this picture ain't a picture either anymore
Though I know it was before
Before the grey wind took me up

Away, away

We were married every afternoon
In the street, outside the school
But in the morning you were gone
Cherry blossom, should be your name
You were gone, as soon as you came
When the first wind shook your branch
When the first wind took you up
When the grey wind took you up
Away

A Journey Too Far

What Do You Know

I could have been like you
If my life were different
Towed a different line
Drank a different wine

But it ain't so
What do you know, what do you know
But it ain't so
What do you know, what do you know

Took a train eight hours East
Send some money home
I think of you all every night
Dream I'm not alone

But it ain't so
What do you know, what do you know
But it ain't so
What do you know, what do you know

What do you know about your love
Sleeping peaceful as a dove
Does he dream of you
Or someone else

Living in two states of mind
I went but you left me behind
Now we look for thread to bind
Our love back together

Now we look for thread to bind
Our love back together
Now we look for thread to bind
Our love back together
Now we look for thread to bind
Our love back together

Crescent City

Crescent city, Crescent city, oh
Halfway to where I'm going to
I pass you by and then who knows
When I'll next see you my pretty rose
Like laughing, like laughing, like laughing
Or crying, oh
When will I next see you
O my wandering soul

Now there's a madman on the heath
He's praying for some sweet relief
So he sits down and he thinks
When that crescent moon glows pink
Like laughing, like laughing, like laughing
Or crying, oh
What is dust to dust like you
O my wandering soul

Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun, thinking of the sun
Thinking of...

If I could choose I'd become dust
I'd pass like orange metal rust
Into the wind the licking air
When I'd travel far from here
Like laughing, like laughing, like laughing
Or crying, oh
What is dust to dust like you
O my wandering soul

Crescent city, Crescent city, oh
Half way to where I'm going to
I pass you by and then who knows
When I'll next see you my pretty rose
Like laughing, like laughing, like laughing
Or crying, oh
When will I next see you
My wandering soul

Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun, thinking of the sun
Thinking of...

Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun
Looking at the moon but I'm thinking of the sun, thinking of the sun
Thinking of the sun

Don't Run

Oh, momma don't run
Don't run, don't run
Now don't run, don't run
Though the feeling is strong

Momma don't run
Don't run, don't run
You know you've got
Too much love to give

Now baby don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry
Those tears

Baby don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry
You know you've got
Too much love to live

And if you wake in the night
With your chest feeling tight
Oh, momma don't run
Don't run, don't run
You know you've got
Too much love to give

And if you wake in the night
With your chest feeling tight
Oh, momma don't run
Don't run, don't run
You know you've got
Too much love to give

Your love weighs a tonne

Your love weighs a tonne
It's too heavy for me
And I can't carry on
Another day

Your love weighs a tonne
Your love weighs a tonne

You told me stories of a time before
Before I knew what love was for
Before anger opened up the door
And I can't take it anymore

Your love weighs a tonne
Your love weighs a tonne
Your love weighs a tonne

And I keep on holding on
But I'm gonna drop this weight before long
I keep on holding on
But I'm gonna drop this weight before long

Won't you help me make the grade
I don't want to lose this love we made
Won't you help me to get straight
Help me carry this weight

Cause I keep on holding on
But I'm gonna drop this weight before long
I keep on holding on
But I'm gonna drop this weight before long

Your love weighs a tonne
Your love weighs a tonne

Backlash

Backlash, the Backlash
Backlash, the Backlash

Drive too hard
Push too far
People won't stand
Another losing hand

Backlash, the Backlash
Backlash, the Backlash

Man with no name
You fade away
People won't stand
Another losing hand

Ramshackle Rose

When you're long gone
Sun don't shine and the moon don't glow
When you're long gone

When you're long gone
Rain don't rain and the wind don't blow
When you're long gone

When you're long gone
When you're long gone

There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance
There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance

She was a ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose
Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose

Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose
Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose

When you're long gone
Nobody knows whose side you're on
When you're long gone

When you're long gone
Nobody tells you right from wrong
When you're long gone

When you're long gone
When you're long gone

There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance
There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance

She was a ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose
Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose
Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose
Ramshackle, ramshackle
Ramshackle rose

When you're long gone

There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance
There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance

There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance
There's no chance like a second chance
No chance like a second chance

My Lord

My Lord knows just where I've been
On a gilded road with boots of tin
And a suit that lets the bullets in
I keep marching on

Marching on to glory, I keep marching on
Marching on to glory, yeah I keep marching on

My Lord says that I'll be saved
Have everything I ever craved
So I'm not to be afraid
I just keep marching on

Marching on to glory, yeah I keep marching on
Marching on to glory, I keep marching on

So it seems that today's my day
My day to walk the glory way
But if heaven's full of men like you
Then I'll take hell and the devil too

Marching on to glory, yeah I keep marching on
Marching on to glory, I keep marching on

Marching on to glory, yeah I keep marching on
Marching on to glory, I keep marching on

Medicine chest

I can't find the keys to the medicine chest
Got a pain in my head and a pain in my chest
Losing my teeth and no relief
'Til we blow the lock on the castle keep

Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Where I keep my oil in the pill jar

Two way mirror talking midnight terror
John Paul's melting head gone forever
Three times screaming head Bacon triptych
Five times slaughterhouse Vonnegut mystery

Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Where I keep my oil in the pill jar

No way back into the dream for me
A false leg glass eye skeleton key
Owls on the road side screech, hey hey
And there's no way back into the dream for me

Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Oh the medicine chest
Where I keep my oil in the pill jar

An angel with no halo

The ducks fly across the room from left to right
Past the mirror and the antique light
And the Pacific wind is blowing your ship in
Do you wanna know, where everybody goes
When the bar is empty like the bottle
Or a lorry with no payload
An angel with no halo

An angel with no halo
An angel with no halo

An angel with no halo
An angel with no halo
An angel with no halo
An angel with no halo

The ducks fly across the room from left to right
Past the mirror and the antique light
And the Pacific wind is blowing your ship in
Do you wanna know, where everybody goes
When the bar is empty like the bottle
Or a lorry with no payload
An angel with no halo

One

There's not only one love, not only one love
Not only one love in this world my dear
There's not only one love, not only one love
Not only one love in this world my dear

I've been watching hours, see them come and go
Yes they come and go, yes they come and go, oh
Watching hours for someone I used to know
I've been watching hours for someone

Our friends said I told you so, they said I told you so
You could wait forever for a heart you'll never know
Love it comes and goes, love it comes and goes
And you could wait forever for someone

There's not only one love, not only one love
Not only one love in this world my dear
There's not only one love, not only one love
Not only one love in this world my dear

I see time passing, see time passing by
Like crystal halos that float across the sky
A thing of beauty flashing past the eye
A thing of beauty passing by

So why don't you try
Some loving of a different kind
That's good to hold and easy to find
My love is easy to find

There's not only one love, not only one love
Not only one love in this world my dear
There's not only one love, not only one love
Not just one love in this world my dear

Not only one, not only one love
Not only one, not only one love
Not only one, not only one love
Not only one, not only one love

Like Dark to light

You held on to the winter
Held on to make it right
Like a leaf to a branch
Like hope to a glance
Like dark to light

You were swimming in the to and fro
Nothing but a laughter low
Opened up, like I did to you
Light up, like a picture show
From dark to light

And we worried about the cares
The wolves and melting ice
About trying to be nice

You held on to the winter
Held on to make it right
Like a leaf to a branch
Like hope to a glance
Like dark to light

You were swimming in the to and fro
Nothing but a laughter low
Opened up, like I did to you
Light up, like a picture show
From dark to light
